Bah, this is about ~$50 difference.

Realistically, you're buying the car for what it is. If you wanted just speed then you would get something else. None of the complainers were going to buy one anyway. I especially liked the 20 year old price comparison. Inflation is a bitch
Neither the 370Z nor the MX-5 can thrill at that level. Compared to Subaru, they look like blunt, dull communicators here, outclassed by a new affordable driver’s car of amazing delicacy and extraordinary talent. One that could be the best sports car to come out of Japan since the Honda NSX, and that must be worth £25k from anyone who knows what sunny weekends and great roads were really made for.

Anyway, even if this car was $40k, who were would be buying one anyway?

Strip it down and it is a low tech car with basic mechanical with non exotic parts fitted, it should cost 45k, its no more advance than a Toyota Corolla and build wise it would cost far less than a Prius, it costs less than 40k retail in Japan so what, 30k buy cost, they are just being greedy and cutting out real enthusiasts, the original AE86 was not silly expensive and that's what made it a hero.
Things you can buy for less brand new that will spank it or have other merits.
WRX with 15k in your back poket
Impreza STI, just about there...
Golf GTI with a couple of options
Polo GTI with 15k in your back pocket
Megane RS250 with 10k in you back pocket...
Mazda 3 MPS with 12k in your back poket
Mazda MX5 with 10k in your back pocket
Mazda RX8 fully loaded with a few grand for wheels.
Just saying.

The only two RWD cars there are the MX5 and RX8 as far as I can tell... That's one of the main points of the '86. If it's news, some people don't actually like FWD too much, even if it is faster in some instances.
RX8 is unreliable from what I've heard... and as for the MX5, the '86 is faster, and judging by that review I posted, more fun... Though it's fair enough to compare the two, they are in the same market, unlike pretty much all of the other cars you've mentioned IMO.
You say stripping it back it's no more advanced than a Corolla? What about the Direct Injection, lower Centre of Gravity than a 458 Italia (among other high-end cars, not to mention the '86 has a higher ride height than all of these, yet still manages to have it's CoG lower), 4 seats in such a small package. (As said in the Autocar reveiw - even the 370Z, being a much bigger car, hasn't got 4 seats)..
There are more pro's to this car than you seem to be letting on.
