Postby sergei » Fri Apr 13, 2012 1:11 pm

Need a reality check:
What is a value of a ceramic CT20b in good condition?

Some dreamers out there list them for around $800, wouldn't I
Imagine anyone paying more than $600-650 for one. They're getting on a bit now.

Is there much demand for them? I would think it is best upgrade for CT26 (value for money), and since there are quite a few of gen2 3SGTE around, they would sell like hotcakes?

Yeah always demand for them, $600 would sell it quickly. Could probably hold out for $800 if you felt the need.

Thanks, will do, but I have to see it first (and most importantly the engine it came with). I am going to pick up the pallet tomorrow, that will be a lot of fun....

133K, so has a useable life of 50-60K left depending on how its been treated.

$550-$650 is pretty realistic \ fair

FYI, I got $900 for mine with 20,000 kms on it, 2 years ago.

Just because your turbo died at 180kms, does not mean that most turbos will last this long. 180kms on any turbo is exceptionally good milage I think.

As far as I know, a turbo could be dead at 130kms too.

or 330k ;).

My drive car (ST205) has already 175k, and there is no sign of turbo wear (it does not even whine). My ST165 original turbo done 200k and there was no sign of wear (no shaft play, or oil in the housings).

Life time of a turbo is a speculation. Most important factor to turbo failure is coke (sludge). If the engine is serviced regularly with good oil, and it does not run stupid amount of boost, there are no reasons for turbo failure at 130k or even 230k.

In most cases, after 150k people give up on regular servicing and that leads to multiple problems including turbo failure.

This was based on my CT26

- 5 year Full service history since new (80,000 kms)
- 3 years of unknown history (30,000 kms
- 10 years under me (110,000kms) good oil and regular changes, warm downs.

All it takes is to skip 1 service, on already prolonged service periods (eg: 15k service period vs 5k that is required for Turbo).

Are CT20b's that good that you can't just get a dirty old CT26 rebuilt with better designed exh and comp wheels?

Most likely you can. CT20b is good because it is more or less a decent turbo (unlike CT26) and is a bolt on for Gen2. You can get better results with turbos from dark side (Subaru/Mitsubishi) if your ECU allows, but those are not bolt-ons and at least require a spacer.

But generally speaking with CT20b at 1bar with Gen1/2 stock engine, and stock ECU you can expect ~ 170-180kW at the 4 wheels with minimal mods, compared to CT26 ~140kW at the 4 wheels if you are lucky (same boost).

Do you know if they spool better or is it all top end?
