Because it's interesting, and a point of difference.

Same as why Subaru persists with the boxer engine, it's got its own quirks and limitations, but it's a trademark of sorts for the company.

Plenty of fast/successful rotary powered cars in every discipline of racing.

It has its downsides, but it's ignorant to dismiss it as a crappy engine that's good for nothing.

Hasnt Mazda ceased production of the rotary engine now?

I love seeing Rotaries in rallies and racing, I.e the mainfrieght classic RX7 is awesome,

I hate the sound of rotaries that the backwards hat brigade have modified to sound like a pile of crap and the associated genre of people in this category.

I still wonder how with the supposed changing of the noise laws how alot of these cars are still legally on the roads? Just waiting for the day when one of the idiots falls off the corner near my house being an idiot at 3am so I can go and laugh at them

In reality boxer engine is not as different to inline 4 engine. Subaru is using it because it is well proven for them, has no major disadvantages and has plenty of advantages compared to an inline 4 (compact, low centre of gravity). Look at Porsche: they are using boxer engine (although 6cyl) and they are very successful with it.

Yes, It's like WRXs, the proper race/rally ones sound completely different to the ones the bois have on the street

Aahhh sorry, I was meaning more in terms of being inefficient to manufacture by comparison to an inline 4.

Two heads, four cam shafts, etc etc... Disadvantages with exhaust manifold and intake manifold design.

Thankfully not everything gets drilled down to bottom dollar, and we've got some variation.

I quite like boxer motors, nothing against them.

I like the 'subaru' sound, compared to just 'bbbrrrraaaawweerrrrr" of normal 4 cyl engines.

Not all engine designs simply stop because they aren't good enough.
Wasn't the M3 fitted with a V8 because of frontal impact stuff?

So is it because it wasn't efficient enough ie. poor at using its supplied fuel and air and burning it cleanly?

Efficiency and emissions aren't the same thing. They aren't that bad on fuel

Indeed, it's because of the need for oil in the combustion chamber for lubrication (same reason all the current learner bikes being made are 4-stroke rather than 2-stroke).

Mazda wins by default - they still exist.

Lancias are cool though. Stratos HF and Delta Integrale are two of my favourite cars ever - I wouldn't own one....but they're cool.

Today's Lancias are Fiat/Chrysler cars that are restyled and badged as Lancias. They're no different to a Toyota Cavaliar or Toyota Lexcen. Been a while since there was an original Lancia car.
