Yes on second thought a bigger turbo for offroading seems counter intuitive.
Thanks for the link - that site has a huge volume of information on the TD27. There are a few small things I'll try first to restore a bit of power in it, and then it seems an intercooler + fuel + boost is the gold standard.

I hear Terrano's are notorious for blowing transmissions.
I read that the later models came with trans coolers - mine's a '93 so I'm not sure if I have one or if it was the next shape. But yes; while I was out on the sand I was thinking about was the constant work the trans was under.
To prevent an issue I drove in 2H on long stretches, and switched between 4H and 2L on the dunes. Plus taking regular breaks. Probably overkill but I'm trying to get a feel for the car.
It has an A/T temp light so I'm hoping that will come on well before I do any damage if there is an issue.

if your worried about trans temps add a cooler with a small fan and maybe a temp gauge
i did this with my landcriuser for peace of mind
