Yeah talk to people who have played with the 2.7s. I know for my Isuzu people have found a certain Subaru turbo makes a big improvement.
One thing that gets me is people want to fir air to air intercoolers. I'd have thought they would be the worst for 4x4

Yes on second thought a bigger turbo for offroading seems counter intuitive.

Thanks for the link - that site has a huge volume of information on the TD27. There are a few small things I'll try first to restore a bit of power in it, and then it seems an intercooler + fuel + boost is the gold standard.

General question, would a trans cooler be beneficial for 4wding? Not for power, but to prevent things dying?

i'd say yes. lots of work, but not much air flow = more heat build up.

I hear Terrano's are notorious for blowing transmissions.

I read that the later models came with trans coolers - mine's a '93 so I'm not sure if I have one or if it was the next shape. But yes; while I was out on the sand I was thinking about was the constant work the trans was under.

To prevent an issue I drove in 2H on long stretches, and switched between 4H and 2L on the dunes. Plus taking regular breaks. Probably overkill but I'm trying to get a feel for the car.

It has an A/T temp light so I'm hoping that will come on well before I do any damage if there is an issue.

Thanks; had a quick look into trans coolers and it doesn't sound overly complex.
