Pulled over on the way to work.

Postby cat007 » Fri Jul 06, 2012 11:37 am

I got pulled over on the way to work this morning by a bike cop.

All in all he was actually very pleasant to deal with and we had a bit of a yarn about track days and what I use the car for etc etc.

Anyway - the reason he pulled me over was because he noticed I was using a spacer for my wheels (20mm spacer).

It's a bolt on - but still not legal apparently.

He also picked up that my exhaust is louder than standard (was about to ask him how he knew what the standard exhaust loudness was, but he wasn't going to ticket me and was nice to deal with, so I just smiled and nodded) - to which he said I could be given a $150 fine.

How much does it cost to get the exhaust level checked (he said as long as it's under 90db it's normally ok) and then certified? Hopefully it's not a full low volume cert that it has to go through for the exhaust?

It was a pain to get pulled over but so nice dealing with a cop that's a normal person and not just a revenue collection agent. Probably helped that I was wearing a suit - if I was wearing a hoody and baggy jeans he probably would've got his ticket book out haha.

I enquired about getting an exhaust cert a couple of years ago but didn't bother going through with it. From memory was around $150

Sweet - well I might as well do that then - if it's the same price as the ticket then it would seem a bit silly to not get it done. As long as it's under the 90db limit haha

Has anyone got a db meter I could borrow to see if I'll pass before forking out $150?

If the spacers are specified on cert plate they are legal. if they aren't they aren't legal, pretty simple.

Yeah the spacers aren't on the cert plate. I got the cert for the suspension about 6 years ago, or more. The spacers and brakes are new.

I haven't gone for a cert yet because I'm worried I'll go for it and then change something else and have to go for it again. Silly reason, I know.

I've got a db meter, but doubt you want to go the distance.

the reason he pulled me over was because he noticed I was using a spacer for my wheels (20mm spacer).

what a hawk eyed mofo.

Just get everything certified so there is no need to worry.

When I put the new engine into the Alfa. I could have tried to sneak it through but the few times I have been stopped it has prevented me getting a ticket. Same with the suspension.

Get a good relationship with a Low volume inspector and it comes in handy.

cause if you have an authority card the exhaust noise "similar to factory" law goes out the window

Thanks for that.

I'm guessing the steps for this are something like:

Get a cage (does it have to be a full cage, or will a half cage do?)
Get it homologated.
Get your motorsport license and make sure you take part in at least one event a year for your log book.

??

Are you sure? Is it an unwritten thing somewhere? I cant recall seeing the option to tick for exhaust on an authority card application?

it's in the WOF book, rather than being an authority card item.

Which makes it a bit "tricky" because it's a "at inspection" time, rather than a "when you're pulled over by a cop" time.

I don't think it has been tested in court or anything yet.
