As Im into rallying I go thru a truckload of tyres. I have a good deal with local tyre guys but it would be so much more convenient if i was set up myself...

Originally i looked at second hand tyre changing machines, but now decided that a good quality tyre iron and a more manual type machine (ie basically just a stand to hold the rim with a pole in centre) would be ideal.

I've looked on the net heaps but apart from tardme having these manual setups, http://www.trademe.co.nz/motors/car-parts-accessories/wheels-tyres/other/auction-494576922.htm, where do you buy Good Quality tyre irons etc? Who sells that stuff? In Waikato area btw.

Reason I ask on here is there are tyre supply fellas floatin around? You guys must know?

What's wrong with the tyre iron that comes with the trademe setup? I have one like it and it does the trick.

I've changed a few tyres at work with our basic machine and they were a real prick to change, they seem to have a super stiff/strong bead.

Would imagine it would be even worse by hand??

yer after watching a vid of some dude trying to put one on online i tend to agree!

I think I'll stick with what I do for now, just a pain in the ass to cart a van load of tyres/rims into town and back each time.

I don't even have mine bolted down and have stripped a pile of tyres. Nothing super low profile mind you. Bolted down would be so much easier though. Unless you need them balanced, the manual changer will do the whole lot.

"lube it up" and it works easy

The sidewalls and beads on the gravel tyres I have are much stiffer than the road tyres I have. That would make them harder to change with hand tools. I have never tried to change car tyres before but it can't be that easy.

I'm pretty keen to find out more on these portable tyre changers.

I guess you'd need to make sure it would secured to the ground - or perhaps your trailer or ute?

How much of a pyromaniac are you? There's many a youtube video of tyres being put on with ether/hairspray/other flammable substance, that way your tool would just need to be for stripping tyres?

Just a thought anyways.... Obviously not the safest idea but it gets the job done.

I've never done a rally tyre, but if I can do a pile of car tyres without even bolting it down.... anyway, i'm not vouching for the machine just saying I found it pretty easy to use for car tyres

Helped my brother do a set of rally tyres in service on a rally when they found the spare rims didn't actually fit on the car. All manual gear (basically a pick axe to break beads, all commercial fleet truck gear etc) so don't know what you guys are whinging about. Stripped tyres off rims before the car came in, they were back out in less than 20 minutes with stripping rims on the car of the rooted tyres (had to run two extra stages when they found the rims didn't fit) then fitted the new tyres. Can't be that hard. :lol:

A lot of tire changing problems are caused from thinking that the bead actually stretches and with enough force it'll go on. It will not. Another is ignoring that the valve is holding the bead off the lowest part of the wheel.
