Earlier tonight my car was green stickered by some wet weed cop that had nothing better to do. My exhaust is to loud. Has anyone else had this before? the reason i ask is that should i a) put the factory exhaust on before i go to vtnz, or b) if i can keep my exhaust on ill put a silence bit in the tip, and unbolt it somewhere and possibly cover half of a flange with a piece of tin to further reduce the sound. so hopefully the car will be within legal limits

this raises the next question, i have heard of exhaust certs. but how does that work, if your exhaust is under the legal desabel, it shouldnt need a cert right? and if its over, it needs to be quieter? so where exactly does needing a cert come in, theres no grey area, its either legal or it isnt?

But yeah as above, if it's louder than factory then you're shit out of luck. They just have to think it is to force you to get it checked. Part of the reason I never bothered changing my exhaust, can't be bothered with the hassles.

I have my exhaust certed on my car, saves any issues than, and a cop can give you a ticket if he believes at the time he pulled you over it is to loud, he doesnt have to test it. it is upto the polices discretion, but if you have cert there is no grounds for the cop to ticket you, unless you have changed it from the cert.
For exhaust cert you get a sticker on your exhaust that coincides with a piece of paper you have to carry with you all the time that has a picture of your exhaust on it that shows all the mufflers ect you have.

So easiest way is do it once and do it right, get cert and you will never have any problems

On this though when I was getting my car certed I asked him to also cert the exhaust too he used his db reader and it was under the legal limit so he told me not to bother as even if I certify it if the police don't like it they can still fine me ect so I shouldn't waste my money untill I get done for it.

that was almost 2 years ago only been pulled over once never any mention of exhaust apart from the one day I changed wof shops and they made me use a silencer

Yeh, it's a bit hit and miss when it comes to cops and exhausts.. None of them ever do it by the book.

My Euro R is fairly loud, especially in high revs and on decel, never been pulled over. Although I did buy it off a cop, and havent changed it (other than wheels), so maybe other cops just know the car.

All cops need to be put through seminars showing what rules to stick to, not case-by-case.. My old M35 before I certed it sat 30mm off the ground at the sump, pulled over 4 times.. First time I convinced him it was just lowering springs and I was waiting for the right ones to turn up to raise it(belived me), 2nd, 3rd and 4th they just mentioned the height and then sent me away.... Seriously, all 4 times I should of been pink stickered, i'm not complaining at all, but it's a bit shit.

P.s this is not an FTP rant, cops are all good, my neighbours a HP and he's the chillest dude out, I just think they need to be more consistent.

There is no way it will pass.. I will try see if I can get one of those silencer tip bits an put that in. And undo a flange oN the exhaust and put a small piece Of tin accross to baffle the exhaust abit. Such a hassle tho will need to get new tyres and a few other things. Failing the exhaust will have to remove it and fit factory exhaust an factory downpipe :(

i find it quite amusing that people have exhuasts on 3sgte's that are deemeed to be too loud. it is soley down to the things restricting the flow, the more pipe after the first flow restrictor (cat/muffler/resonator) the louder and more droney your exhuast will be.

On my 5SGTE build, I had nothing but 3 inch pipe the whole way through, no mufflers/cats/resonators, and at our clubs events it was probably the quietist competition car there. on top of the pit garages at taupo, videoing the car, you could hear cars on all other parts of the track over top of the corolla at full noise down the front straight (closest to the camera)

On our 2nd JZA80 Supra. The factory system has a pair of cats right off the manifold, followed by some pipe then another cat, then some pipe, 2 mufflers then a final muffler at the rear with a tip larger than the rest of the exhuast system. they are a fairly loud factory system and fairly droney.
I built an exhuast system for this car, it consister of headers with long secondaries (i wanted to get that 60/70's sports car sound) going into 2 1/2 inch pipe then a straight thru muffler before the diff then 2 1/2 inch pipe into a round straight through muffler at the back with a 2 1/2 inch tip.
This made the car about at quiet as a Vitz/Swift etc at 80-90kph in 5th (around 2800rpm) you couldn't even hear the engine. I was dissapointed with it. I removed the first muffler, this made it a bit louder but still quieter than standard, and it flew through wof's no questions asked.

If you have an oversized fart canon for a muffler with a huge tip, it is going to amplify the exhuast noise. have the same sized tip as the rest of the exhuast and part of your issue will be solved.

No sympathy here then. Also, no need to bag the cop because he pulled you up for breaking the law. You choose to have a loud exhaust which you know is too loud. Probably cheaper to fix your exhaust properly. its not like it needs to be loud to flow.

Can get some nice looking mufflers that would do the job

Exhaust noise certification isn't really worth the paper it's printed on. Like a WOF, it only certifies that the car was compliant at the time of testing. It's not an instant get out of jail free card. You can still get pulled over and if you're lucky, done for excessive exhaust noise if the officer thinks it's too loud. If this happens you will be required to go for another test at your expense. If you're unlucky you'll also need a new WOF since the cop will have given you a green sticker to go with your exhaust noise infraction.

Easiest (and cheapest in the long run) thing to do is fix it properly and don't make it noticeably loud. If an MR2 turbo can have a legal exhaust that also flows well there's no reason why a GT4 can't.

Don't bag cops either. They're doing their jobs and it's not their fault that your car is illegal.

Im with BZG bling on this.

You get no sympathy at all, if you choose to drive a car you know is illegally loud. And bagging the Police for doing their job is silly too, its not like he pulled you over for having a car with factory noise output, clearly something got his attention.

There is just no justifiable reason to have a loud street car, and as far as im concerned, its fart cannon cars that continue to stir up the publics misguided hate on car enthusiasts.

The less of them on the roads, the better.

If you were my neighbour and insisted on driving round with an obnoxiously loud exhaust chances are you'd find an empty can of expanding foam sitting behind your car one morning.

I hope not, not sure the blitz nur system for the mr2 will pass without the bolt in silencer in, i doubt it will.

Bolt in silencers are legal as far as I know. Which is great for those that want to free up more HP at the track while keepng a roadlegal car the rest of the time. Just dickheads that unbolt them on the street that need a good kick in the 'nads.

Been there/done that - they're illegal. Even if you find a WOF man to pass it, they're so easy to spot that cops will pull you over and hand you a pretty coloured sticker anyway.

Readily interfered with = removable (bolt in) silencer on your tailpipe.
If you want to have one of those baffles in the tailpipe, it must be welded in place.

Basically anything that can easily/quickly change the noise output of your exhaust system is illegal.

You have to do something to get the cops attention first so i'll try my luck. Otherwise i'll get it welded in and take a cordless grinder to the track to remove as needed.

There is no reason to have a noisy exhaust on the street.. its not hard using proper mufflers to get the noise well under the legal limit!

The VIRM says the same

BTW my MR2 when I had the straight 3" pipe on it wasn't very loud at idle, nor at a 2200rpm cruise.

Once you even think about accelerating though :lol:

What brand/type exhaust is it?

Although my Celica is not a ST205, never had trouble with mine which has the HKS super silent with removable silencer.

Guess its also how you drive

you'll have to get a full system and a cert now

2x 3" oval mufflers will do it, except now you dont have a cat you may need a resonator too. good luck

I couldnt even pass with a silencer welded in a few years back.
Ended up getting a couple of flanges welded in, could swap the entire factory system for a 3" straight through in the same time it took to unbolt a silencer using only a 10mm spanner :lol:

If you're not prepared to do it properly with a costly decent set up, the way I had it worked just fine.

Could of also been the fact I was getting older and didnt care so much for the noisy system on the street lol
