single vs twin brakes

Postby ®usty » Sat Aug 11, 2012 3:24 pm

At the moment I have some Tom's SS brakelines which I'm looking to install, and thought while I'm putting those in, I might aswell upgrade a couple of other brake things. Pads and swap over to twin pot brakes.

I've Heard from someone with a Carolla, that it's a pretty common upgrade for them. But looking at some ST202 specs there doesn't seem too be much difference between them, just a more even distribution of pressure on the pads.

The single piston caliper specs
Piston Diameter: 57mm
Piston Count: 1

The twin piston caliper specs
Piston Diameter: 40.4mm
Piston Count: 2

So basically wanting to know if its worth just getting new pads or swapping over to twin pots + new pads.

What do you want out of the car?
I personally don't like to upgrade something that I haven't had a problem with. That's money and effort that could be better spent elsewhere.
That's just me though.

fair point. And with it being brakes you dont want to muck around with them and have something go wrong later on.

With my car I've kept it pretty balanced with the modifications I've done. I do have a set of ST205 brakes but requires a bit of work to fit and more then likely updating my cert., and my SS lines will not fit. Also its not too often you come across and know definitely that they're ST202 McPhearson twin pots, which will swap over without any work. ST202 superstrut twin pots require using parts from both brakes to fit.

Something else that may be worth considering is brake balance and how master cylinder size may be affected. I'm not sure what parts differ between models with different brake setups however.

Agree with above comments, if its not currently an issue etc

When I did my McPherson swap I wanted to keep the twinpots. Wasn't difficult to do the swap little bit if grinding on the caliper bracket to fit the hub and $30 to cut disks to size. The superstrut brake lines didn't work in my situation and they were braided lines too but just binneded them and got some made up to suit which were $40 a side.

my theory is: if you gotta modify a consumable like a disc or a pad to make it fit .............. your set up is wrong.

Get some 4 pot wilwoods from bazda they are worth their weight in gold.

brake modulation is way better and waay cheaper pads than a trd or mintex pad..

Imo you should swap over the entire superstrut setup and bolt on your gt4 brake setup. and you'll need st205 coilovers too.

you may also look at swapping over (or ditching entirely) the gt4's abs system, its alot more ruthless than celica abs. clap clap shudder halt feels like a piece of metal broke off ur car as your car suddenly halts from 100-0 in a couple meters

its ruthless as fk, corner entry speeds are fkn amazing as you come in full tit in 3rd gear and heel toe 2nd scrubbing off speed down to 80 as 2nd gear engages right before the apex of a corner, then 2 feet move over and back on the throttle again as you balance the braking with your left foot ;D

if you got st205 breaks then id be putting them on. i wouldint go to superstrut setup. only thing you gain from that is a big headache and a bigger hole in your walet . you wont have master cylinder problems becouse they are the same as a gt4

Wouldn't grinding calipers, threading knuckles, using washers and trimming discs down to 280mm be more of a headache than superstrut? -- not to mention, wouldnt be certable.

The arms are $300 each, they go in about 130,xxx - 160,xxx kms... It's just an extra consumable. just a drop in the ocean when you look at tyres, brakes, oil and fuel.

If I did swap to SS, I wont its just to much effort. I would only need the SS suspension from a ST205 & only front SS ST205/ST202 coilovers, rear ST205 have different bolt spacing so wont fit.

If I remember correctly. To make the front ST205 brakes to fit you need to, grind part of the knuckle off and add thread to it. add a spacer in somehere to get the spacing right. The front rotors need to be trimmed down to 300mm or under to clear the balljoint. Then longer brakelines. The rears are pretty much a bolt on affair, but may require a apacer aswell. also as anth said brake master cylinder is the same.

Do you know what the specs are for the singles and twins like the ones I posted for the ST202, are for the AE111? (I'm guessing thats the model you did the swap on)

Sounds like a lot of work. Dont fix whats not broken, fitting the twin piston calipers sound the easiest! Will cost you alot to use the 205 brakes. Unless your mr speedy gozalis is it really necessary to put larger brakes on?
