I'd rather that Toyota hadn't $&#$% up their range, direction and capabilities over the last decade so that they didn't need input from other companies to develop anything half decent...

In terms of sporty cars 1994 had the Levin, MR2 Turbo, ST205 GT-Four and Supra.

2010 had nothing at all. Don't even mention the $&#$% Prius...

They aren't a sportcar manufacturer.

They don't need input from other companies.

Its a money thing.

If it costs you a certain amount to develop and produce something like an engine (materials, running costs, maintenance of plants, assembly etc) and a company comes along and says "I'll sell you an engine for that car, that does this and costs you half of what you can make one for" then a business person is likely to say yes to it.

Everything is down to money.

Yeah fair enough. I've always wondered why they got rid of the mr2. Surely it doesn't cost that much to make. Lightweight body and engine from corolla done. People are still buying mx5s so there is a market for a poor man's lotus

Quite simply because people stopped buying them.

No one ever stopped selling a car when sales outstripped demand.

Why choose the cramped, luggage space-less MRS when an MX5 is (slightly more) practical as more than just a toy.

I dont know why everyone hates on the FT86 motor.

The K20A has been out for what, 10 years now?

I'm sure there are going to be plenty of tarted up FT86s to compete on a track battle with that engine in 10 years time.

In other news, those battles are completely genuine and non staged.
Just like WWF.

as im sure you know Toyota own a big chunk of FJH, hence the Subaru collaboration.

I dont know what they were thinking putting the 1zz in the MR2, kinda set themselves up for failure there.... especially with the 2zz sitting there...

Having owned an MR-S, I could say it's the best handling car I have ever driven. It's light & very nimble. Short wheelbase helps around the tight twisty tracks.

Why Toyota haven't put 2ZZ-GE in the MR-s??? Because it would have been too close in performance to the much more expensive Lotus Elise which uses the Toyota 2ZZ-GE engine in it.

Demand has fallen not due to people disliking sports cars or downturn of economy, but simply due to Toyota trying to sell the same car for the past 10 years and not upgrading it & bringing out a newer model. Supra JZA80 1992-2002 - pretty much the same cars for the 10 years apart from a few minor tweaks like addition of VVTi. Toyota are lazy & board of directors or whoever worried about development costs.

I am sure if Toyota takes the 2GR-FSE Engine out of Crown Athlete/Mark X and chucks a couple turbos in it and makes a RWD coupe out of it & calls its a Supra, people will buy it like hot cakes.

Even in the FT-86 I think they should have used the 2ZZ-GE which I think is a great little engine. Boxer engines are crap, everyone knows it. I know people will say oh it has lower centre of gravity, but original AE86 didn't have a boxer engine & it handled great.

Toyota are just too lazy nowadays and driven by conservative board of directors that don't like sports cars.

I can assure everyone there is still plenty of demand for sports cars or else companies like AMG, HSV etc wouldn't exist.

Did you seriously just put "sports car" and "HSV" in the same sentence? 8O

true, but that just means they got it wrong. no need to retire a successful brand because of one misstep - they just need to go back to the roots of the MR2 and actually make an advance.

id prefer a cheap light weight sports car like the mr2 which are in short supply as opposed to a large heavy GT coupe like the supra which Toyota can already have if they bring out a 2gr turbo charged ft-86. But to each their own

Mid Ship Chassis + 2GR-FSE + Supercharger = Lotus Evora

PS: Interesting Fact - Lotus Esprit uses Toyota AE86 Tail Lights.

Because the peakiness of the 2zz did not suit a car they could sell to hairdressers
Would have been cool to make 2 versions though
