Verdict is in:

Dirty pickup as well as very dirty filter.

Cleaned and replaced, good as new now!

Holy crap, what a difference! So much smoother all the way from idle to redline now! At least 10-15 ponies have been found!

Going to chuck some injctor cleaner in next fill too, the gas in the old filter was coming out black!

Found the same when I replaced my Fuel Fliter. Smoother & noticably more power. I replaced mine @ 140kms and it looked like it was the factory filter.

It's got to be one of the most underated things to do to a car.

Does injector cleaner work? Tried it on my old car and didn't notice any difference. Removing and cleaning is quite different.

No idea tbh. Although, the injectors must be pretty dirty given the colour of the fuel. As long as they don't make it worse, for $20 or so it's worth a shot.

im guessing we have the same fuel filter setup so ill ask here

anyone know what the thread is on the base of the fuel filter? I want to replace mine with pushlock fittings, and a regular barbed pushon filter with clamps, the way toyota has done it, it may aswell be 1 piece with the fuel line.

im afraid of breaking the hard line :(

There is a hex on the filter as well, if you're undoing the filter using 2 spanners at once then you're never going to damage the line.

Having said that, not sure on the thread. Might want to check the flare on the filter you're going to be using too otherwise bring on the fire.

I would have thought you'd only do it once in the time you own it? Hardly seems worth the effort. I could understand it for something you'll replace frequently.

At some stage you put dirty fuel into the tank?

If you use fuel to clean to clean parts and then chuck it in the tank it will clog up the pickup and filter to the point it strangulates the motor.
Putting fresh fuel in "dissolves" the muck and gives the impression that all is well for a few days.
The motor will cut suddenly when the tank is below 1/4 and you are on an incline

This is a buddy's pickup after we discovered the same problem, took weeks to figure what was happening.

If the fuel is coming out black - I suggest drain the tank before it re-occurs and only fill from the gas station in future

Not normal people,

the stuff in there actually comes from the pump itself,
ias they wear the brushes the brush dust goes into the fuel due to the way they are designed.

Doesn't restricted flow act more like a rev limiter then an on-off switch, coming down in RPM as it gets more clogged but not affecting idle & no load RPM?
I don't think that's a fuel filter problem.

Exactly. Which is why its funny when people are making their fuel systems and putting a filter before the pump and not after.

In my (limited) experience, restricted flow can lean the engine out and cause it to detonate to pieces (blew up a turbo charade like this - not with the filter but with a mixture adjustment), but I've never heard of it acting like a rev limiter. Car had a sligh surge at idle before, completely gone now, and much smoother as above.

Oh hell, my the pickup was nothing like that! It was black in the centre where the actual line is behind the mesh, but that's all. I've only ever used pump gas too. 98 from gull or bp whenever I can.

You know the 98 from gull is an ethanol blend right?

Not the best for rubber fuel lines on anything more than a few years old

That and you're fuel usage will increase when using it, as alcohol has less energy than petrol

/sorry for turning this into the petrol vs ethanol blend thread it is about to become
