Recommend a: 3" muffler (oval body type)

Postby ~SlideWays~ » Mon Aug 20, 2012 12:12 pm

Following on from my other thread about exhausts:

I'm looking into options for a muffler to suit a 1jzgte 3" mild steel exhaust, which I will be making up from scratch so open to suggestions.

Current plan is 3" Sinco downpipe 3" all the way to a big oval rear muffler. I could add a resonator but they don't really appear to quieten it down, more just change the note.

I don't want a droney cannon type, it needs to be quiet-ish at 100kph cruising part trottle but would be nice if it has a nice straight 6 howl at full throttle. Free flowing design.

Must be mild steel so I can weld it myself.

I went to a local Pit Stop to see what they had, one was a 'Fastflow' which is the chambered design (no fibreglass) with many copies (Magnaflow/soundflow/etc) and the other one was an interesting design with three chambers one open chamber in the centre with the other two filed with fibreglass and offset 3" perforated pipes going through each. The perforation design didn't look very good as it just looked like drilled holes rather than actually sticking out into the gas flow like resonators have.

The guy recommended the cheaper Flowfast one but after googling videos of 1JZ's with these mufflers its going to be too loud.

I've used a Fastflow on my Landrcuiser turbo diesel and it works well but not a good comparison since diesels are quiet quite with turbo's.

Fastflow is sub $100
Other 3 chamber design was $170-ish.

Can anyone suggest what sort of muffler they have used and who the supplier was?

Cheers

Always had good experiences with AdrenalinR in Hastings, they do a real nice oval for about $400. Sounds like alot but their design is one of the best out there. (3 layer material + louvred tubes)

No Repco or Midas muffler is going to anywhere near these in terms of sound dampening.

They are stainless though, but you could get the to weld a mild steel section on for connection to your existing exhaust. They should know how to do this properly with the correct rods.

I have one of the perforated ones you mention on my starlet, with a full 3" system from the turbo and one 3" reso it is barely audible at cruise. It seems to work alot better than what i expected.

Super turbo style? or copy of.
Bit more money but real quiet and keeps the flow good. Put it on my 4agte so it would pass the cert.

I bought it for $150 but it was a round one which is not the common shape. I think the oval version was abit less. Pitstops version was over $250.

pitstop buy their mufflers from chase. $250 at pitstop = $50 at chase.

Does this chase place do an oval type 2.5inch stainless muffler?

Would rather only put 1 decent muffler in my new exhaust rather than having a million resonators to get it quiet...

i didnt see, but probably. its a huge warehouse with shelves stacked 2 stories high of just mufflers, i bought 2 mild steel 1oval & 1round, 3" free flowing mufflers for my exhaust cert, was about $120 in total. got me 87db as a cat-back mild steel 3" system

no noticible loss in performance over a greenstickered 3" straightpipe system

I've had a few combo's on my 1JZ (w/ stock twins)

Rear Muffler was a chase 3" centre-to-centre. Had perforated sections each end with a chamber in the middle (could see straight through).
Centre Muffler was a Flowmaster 40 series 'delta flow'. Has no packing/wadding.

Was pretty quiet, almost too quiet, still had a slight drone between 2000-2500rpm.

Last setup was with only the Flowmater at the rear, and it was a bit roudy.
Well, howled like a banshee at full noise, was a bit resonanty at lower/mid range RPM. But was only used for track days by then so didn't mind too much.
