20V cambelt misalignment and bolt fouling?

Post by touge_ae101 »

hey guys,

just been helping put the engine in the ae82 and noticed a few things. i'm a bit baffled as to what could have caused it but perhaps someone else has had similar problems...

the tensioner is fouling on the water pump bolt and seems to be misaligned with the cambelt? could this be down to the difference between blacktop/silvertop belts/offsets?
also waterpump has had a bit ground out of it so the tensioner clears... poor quality parts?? - see pics

funnily enough all work has been done by an engine rebuilder... we insisted on using TGP parts for the rebuild(s) but we have problems like this (there has been many others over the last 12months)

if anyone has got any info on what could have gone wrong... would be good to know. i'll be contacting mark on monday for all new bits and will do the work myself this time...

the problem will be the parts used,

the BT and ST oil pumps are different in the belt tensioner,
and the water pumps are specific to the BT and ST too.

If you use a BT and a ST part, the belt rubs on the water pump,
as you have found out.

It looks like you have BT oil pump and a ST water pump.

Need a BT oil pump with a BT water pump,
or a ST oil pump with a ST water pump.

You will also find the cambelt covers wont fit.

And isn't there a difference of one tooth in the ST/BT belts - the BT being longer?
See ya

yes due the the tensioner being in a different place.

That's annoying Rhys. Did your old man have to foot the bill for this last rebuild?

i may be wrong but thats a hydraulic tensioner which would only bolt onto a blacktop oil pump right? so you must have a silvertop water pump?

or do they have the same mounts for the tensioner
