What should I wrap my engine loom with?
It's just a bunch of wires right now, after installing the Link.
I'm thinking that spiral binding stuff. But I will probably need two or three different sizes, for the really skinny and the really fat bunches of wire.
It can look a bit shitty where you join bits together, or go from one size to the other.
It also take ages to wind it on.

Or electrical tape.
But, what kind of tape? Is there a preferred brand?
I don't really want to use some tape then find that the one I used is not suited to the engine bay environment and melts or goes all sticky.

I also don't want to use anything crazy expensive, it's not a bloody space shuttle.

What have other people used?

Split conduit stuff is probably easiest, and you only really have to tape it at the ends, if at all. Super easy to put on, flexible, prevent wires rubbing on stuff and reasonably resistant to heat.

Yup, all mine is done in split conduit. Its not terribly dear, and its rated to 120 degrees so it won't melt too easily. I use Hamal vinyl loom tape, its quite stretchy so you can pull it tight to keep everything bound together.
I got a length of this fancy braid looking conduit from one of my customers ages ago. Looks really neat, but I don't know if its any good.

Just the first listing found on trademe, 10m for $20. So reasonably affordable. The other benefit is if you ever need to get at the wiring for any reason then its nice and easy. Likewise with ever having to add extra lengths of wire if you change things.

That split conduit is available at Jaycar and Dick Smith in a range of sizes and lengths, and reasonably cheap.

I think the white tape I have is hamal.,,,, but it's white :roll:

Do Repco stock it?

I'm not sure that split conduit would suit my loom. The loom is quite short, and has wire off-shoots all along it. The only long run is just two wires thick.

Thats actually the beauty of it. Being that its split, run everything through it, wrap a loop of plain black electrical tape around the tube where you want a wire out, pull that wire out through the split and put a bit of tape around directly after it.

Basically you end up with a single length of conduit with a wire coming out of it. Probably looks better in person than how I've explained it.

Nah the loom tape is different, its kind of a satin black. Dont carry it, usually order it when I need it.

Just go visit a local autosparky/parts supplier, was shit loads cheaper than buying from Super Cheap/Repco.

I used braid to cover mine and it looks really nice , but not good if you have to mod something.
The split stuff is good and easy to mod if needed .
Make sure you get proper loom tape as ordinary insulation tape sucks real bad when you have to remove it in 6 months time , did someone say sticky mess :lol:

The flex stuff is a PITA to work with,
hard to get wires through, hard to get the ends to look good and last, even with gluefilled heatshrink,
and you can still see the wiring through it,
and it doesn't like much heat or it melts then frays to bits.

I just used some vinyl electrical tape.
30 minutes later loom is wrapped.
Most of the time was spent extracting it from the engine then putting it back.
