4AGTE failure

Postby bluemaumau » Thu Jan 03, 2013 9:08 pm

hi guys

long time no see.

i havnt done any work on cars for a while but pulled the 4agte out of the garage just before xmas last year (im living in oz now, so thought i best take it for a thrash)

so i took it for a burn (around 30mins driving time - not giving it a belting, except on the odd straight)

went around a corner in boosting second into third - gate opened then i heard a popping type sound - close to a intercooler pipe blowing off.

then no drive and the engine stalled as i came to a stop on the side of the road.

the car turns over. it seems to be turning over quicker than before and to a different tune.

i realise its hard to diagnose based on provided info, but as i only have a week left in the country i thought id ask for peoples opinions on what to check..

ive checked the plugs - no oil (no oil/smoke in rear view)
checked I/C pipe work
checked wiring to fuel.

im going to dump the oil tomo and look for anything out of the norm. am i correct in assuming the faster turning over means the compression is buggered?

any ideas on what to attack would be appreciated

or if anyone wants to buy the thing let me know, going cheap :?

Probably stating the obvious, but you've checked the cambelt or timing?

might be a stupid idea ....does it have a dizzy?

A few years ago i had a bluetopd 4age wagon at the drags ,the rotor in the dizzy was old and it shattered on a run ,made the same noises you are talking about It even had the faster turning over you complain about......Just an idea may be waaayyy off tho.

just to confirm you have turned the crankshaft, seen the belt move across cam sprockets, and all is well in timing land?

Snapped cambelt would be the first thing I would check, had the same happen to an old flatmate.

Spinning over faster than normal would suggest that you've lost compression.. either the cambelt has broken or slipped a couple of teeth and bent valves. Are you absolutely sure that the belt is still timed right?

Oh yeah, my bad. Still.. typical causes of lost compression.

went to do the compression test today and realised the cam gears didnt rotate.

8O

ripped all the belts/pulleys and covers off to find the key from the crank lodged in the crank pulley [blew the section of pulley out]

crank sprocket seems to be fine as does the crank. [ except the sprocket is out of timing ]

so im hoping it is just a simple replace key and crank pulley

:?

Wow yeah, that'd do it. Was the crank pulley bolt loose?

yeah caused by the crank pulley not tight enough,

It happened to the first turbo motor I assembled myself years ago,
unfortunatly it bent 12 out of 20 valves on mine.
