Water pump

Postby Grrrrrrr! » Sun Jan 06, 2013 3:16 pm

Anybody know of a car (or other source) that has a belt driven water pump that is basically selfcontained? ie. it doesn't block into the block just has an inlet and outlet hose connection and bolts onto a bracket. Wont need to deal with high temps, just needs to be robust enough not to self destruct with the vibration. Oh, and needs a bolt on pulley, not a pressed on one.

I'm looking at mounting a mechanical water pump where the aircon compressor used to be for a water to air intercooler setup. Have found one that looks like I could make a rear cover/bracket for reasonably easily, but i'm lazy and CBF designing for sealing etc if there is an off the shelf item i can buy.

I can't think of any but rest assured it's gonna bug me forever
Put a pulley in place of the turbine on a small turbo with some form of oil system?

There'd be something agricultural that'd do it, but whether they'd do one small enough to fit would be the question

Looking at non-electric options as a mechanical pump will provide far more flow.

I had been looking at the davies&craig pumps, but from FSAE experience they really just dont last (in that environment at least).

I'll be keeping an eye out for a st205 setup or similar on trademe while i go about sorting out the heat exchanger and plumbing.

4AGE 20V one with an adapter welded onto where the water comes in/out of the bock, as the other end fits a hose fine,
and you will jave to make mounts for whatever you end up with?

Cheers matt, might be a candidate. Making mounts isn't a problem, have an electric hot glue gun (MIG) at my disposal, so thats no problems. Having to machine stuff that needs to seal is a bit more of a PITA.

I'm keeping my eye out for a st205 setup, there was one on tardme before xmas but the seller didn't reply to my questions, not sure how good the flow rate from a single st205 pump is, might have to double up.

Cheers Revvy, but i get teh feeling availablitly might be an issue?

Yep it was Australian assembled galants with a 2.4(4g64), theyre belt driven off the back of the camshaft, although i cant recall if it has two pipes for water oulet/inlet.

It would be easy to check though as your local repco/bnt etc should have one in stock to look at.

Why do you think electric ones won't be enough? What's your set up?
Would be a lot easier to get working.

Years ago, in dad's boat he had a separately driven water pump for cooling the inboard. Maybe something marine like that would work....

Why not use a subby electric one ?, it was designed for the job.
Something to think about if adapting a water pump is not running it too fast as most pressed steel impellers will cavitate at quite low revs ( 4000ish I believe )

Reasons i dont want an electric one are:

1) heat, going to be very close to a hot stainless downpipe
2) pressure requirement, since the piping has to go from the back of an mr2 to the front, the pressure required will be higher than an FF application
3) I want high mass flow, so pressure requirement is going to be even higher.
4) I CBF doing a decent wiring job, since that will require me delving deeper into the previous owners hachet job, at which point i'll probably get pissed off, rip the lot out, then install a link, a motec dash/logger and be out of pocket about 10K :)

1) it does not have to be in any specific location (can be way at the front, as long as it is below the water level).
2) Pressure is not a problem providing there is no huge restriction. You will not get higher pressure from a bigger centrifugal pump.
3) Brand new ST205 pump is a tad over $100, and flows well enough to satisfy your needs (or any other needs). You will not be dissipating 100kW through in intercooler continuously any way, hence the normal engine pump will be overkill. You will probably surge the normal pump as well with the smaller diameter pipes.
4) all you need to is wire a relay and a fuse to ignition and battery feed.

So what flow rate exactly does a st205 pump provide at 5psi,8psi and 10psi, i'd love to know, because so far i haven't been able to find any actual data on what that pump flows. Then if you could just tell me exactly what my needs are it'll save me a bit of time and a bunch of heat transfer calcs.. kthxbye.
