The gauge cluster in the 86 has issues, just the tacho really. Have had a couple of people look at it and couldn't work out what the story is.

So looking at aftermarket tacho options. Ideally want something 0 - 9000rpm, with a shift light. Multiple shift lifts would be even better, think F1 etc.

Don't want anything overly gawdy or cheap. Just something clean and functional.

sorry for the mini hijack

how do you install a tacho/shiftlight into a toyota?

mainly 20v 4age

red - ACC power
black - ground/earth
green - ???

that bits got me stumped

The Shift-i products are meant to be really good, lots of guys I know swear by them, and have never looked at the tacho again! (on the track)

Green goes to one side of the coil, can't remember which side, I no mine didn't work one way so I put it on the other wire and went fine.

Has to be the ignition/tacho signal. Won't do anything otherwise.
Check the instructions, or take a guess at what kind of signal the
tacho wants e.g. 5V, 12V, coil negative etc.

Think that would be excellent for the track, as changing by tacho
is impossible when things are busy. Changing by ear is easy enough,
but you can never be sure you haven't left yourself a few hundred rpm
short of your ideal shift point.

think bazda stocks them for a good price, few people on here have got them I think

Whats wrong with the stock tacho? Signal from the coils or ecu not driving it? You may need to change the restistor inside the tacho - relatively easy job
