Here, here! I'm totally up for an increase in speed limits on highways (I personlly think the SH1 before the Bombay's, Hauraki Plains, SH1 near Whangerai are a joke @ 100kph).

Interesting driving in Canada; speed limits are 110kph, but on the way up to Alberta from Vancouver I was sitting at 120kph, yet getting passed by everyone including massive B-trains and police. I sat 130kph most of the trip and still got passed, but by and large only slightly slower than most other traffic.

I saw a couple of police cars parked up with radar guns and they didn't batt an eyelid with me coming past at 130kph. A few of the locals reckoned so long as you're not being stupid or a cop is having a bad day, they're unlikely to ticket you.

Do they have speed kills campaign?

Edit: the population in Canada is 33.4M the death toll is at ~2200.
That works out to 0.007% of population died on the road.

The population in NZ is 4.5M the death toll is at roughly ~300 (rounding up a bit, the 2012 is at 291 I believe).
That works out to 0.007%

WTF is going on? No extreme policing of the speed and yet same percentage of death toll. Our government is full of shit.

Edit2: How about we target booze instead?
In New Zealand, estimates indicate between 600 and 1000 people die each year

http://www.arphs.govt.nz/Portals/0/Health%20Information/Alcohol%20and%20Tobacco/ARPHS%20Alcohol%20and%20Tobacco%20service/alcohol-factsheets.pdf

Smoking definitely kills better than speeding:
smoking-related deaths is between 4,300 and 4,700 per year.

http://smokefree.org.nz/sites/default/files/Fact_5000_NZers-fnl-081003_0_0.pdf

Or even better what about obesity:
Ministry of Health and University of Auckland study estimated that in 1997 more than 3000 deaths in New Zealand were attributable to overweight and obesity

Maybe its because cars are getting safer and safer every year? Would be the same here if more people invested in safer cars, often the fatalities you see on the news are accompanied with a picture of an old car torn to shreds. Stability control alone would save a lot of people.

Also, if you take Canada's extreme weather away from the equation I bet their toll would be a lot lower than ours.

These 90 Zones have no effect on most Kiwi drivers as 95% of us drive under the speed limit in 100kph zones anyway, its the 5% trying to overtake the people doing 90 that cause most of the acidentes.

So in other words: "Speed Kills" campaign and ticketing policy is a big failure?

I think the point the government has been quietly trying to make is that traffic accidents cost hundreds of thousands of dollars each to resolve.

Someone dies of smoking or obesity; it's comparatively less expensive and impacts less people (vs. investigators, road workers, police, ambulance, fire fighters, helicopters etc).

I like variable speed limits too - speed limit is posted on an electronic sign and changes based on traffic flows.

If it were up to me to make a difference; I would tighten licencing and make car handling skills a key component of driver education. I still believe you learn more in a grass paddock in 30 mins than almost any other form of driver training.

When some one is terminally ill because of smoking or obesity, they cost hundreds of thousands (if not millions) of dollars in hospital bills. I don't think the fatal accidents come even close. It is probably much cheaper to keep a trauma patient in hospital then a cancer patient...

Thats cool, just stay the f^&k out of the passing lane so you aren't obstructing traffic. And no speeding up to 110 either.

Nope. Its just an observation, not factual at all, I have just noticed that most people drive at less that 100 kph in 100 zones be it open road or motorway and go very slow around corners, you can drive all the way from Taupo or the Coromadel back to Auckland and guarantee the only time the traffic will start flowing properly will be the hills down from Bombay.

Have also observed that most are quite happy doing 60-65 in a 50 zone and 85-90 in a 70 zone and will not slow down at all for road works.

Its just an observation and I don't believe for one second that lowering the limit to 90 will make a lick of difference.

I meant "us" as in Kiwi's, I am not the guy blocking the passing lane or sittig in the "fast lane" doing exactly 100kph, if someone want top pass me I will make it very easy for them... I will also make it very uncomfortable for them when they slow down for corners and accelerate and decelerate like a yo-yo.

This! $&#$% Yo-yo style of driving. Really gets me, brave to do 110kph on straight, suddenly a coward doing 30kph in 65kph recommended corner.

This is not a speed limit sign:

i love it when i gas up to 130 and still don't gain on the car, but have to slow down to 80 once past the passing lane. Makes me full of joy.

I have only found 2 corners where I have had to do the suggested speed on

All the rest been able to do 2-3times it depending on what im on/in and road conditions
Why dream it when you can live it

As a general rule of thumb I just convert them to mph, anything greater than 55 and I just leave the cruse control on 106kph.

I love it when the passing lane ends and there is huge clusterf#@k of douchebags slowing down, I sit back in the passing lane at 106 and wait... 200m after the passing lane ends I boost it passing all of them as they are slowing back down to 85-90, that way I don even have to speed, it confuses the hell out of them, you can get upto six of them, its like running over a pack of ducklings crossing the road.

Can remember being told in a defensive driving course that the speeds put on corners are the absolute max speed you could go around at. And only Michael Schumacher in his F1 car would be able to go quicker

They probably meant thats the highest speed you could go round and be able to stop in the length of clear road in front of you (ie, the highest speed you can do and still be able to not be $&#$% if theres a fallen tree at the corner exit.

Nah definately highest cornering speed  . iirc his words were along the lines of "only Michael Schumacher could go around faster without falling off the road" or something to that effect.

we came to the conclusion that those posted speed corner signs are what you could get around them in something like an austin a40, that would be when most of them would have been put up anyway
