Neutral Starter Switch (NSW) bypass - AE101
I'm in the process of putting a formerly automatic 20V 4AGE into an AE92 Liftback manual (probably similar to the one your grandmother owns...) and I'm seeking information about the automatic (park/neutral) starter by-pass - that is the thing that allows the car to start only when it's in park or neutral.
What I'm hoping to find out is that whether this "NSW" pin on the ECU needs to be:
- Bridged with STA (start signal, so 12v while cranking)
- Given 12v+ (IGN on)
- Or grounded?
If anyone could shed some light on this it would be great - information on the internet seems rather mixed....

Bridge at the auto connector on the gearbox - away you go

Thanks for the reply. Thats not posible for me as its a manual loom. As the orignal post asks dose the nsw pin require constant power, power when starting or be grounded? Thanks

On an SW20 MR2 the gearbox switch (park and neutral) effectively bridges NSW and STA pins on the ECU. You'd think it would be the same on the AE101.

Your right, it does do that, but its much simpler to join at the plug in the engine bay than get the ecu out from the dash etc.

This diagram isn't the easiest to follow but it is for a Silvertop. It shows the A/T wiring for the NSW system.

Re: Neutral Starter Switch (NSW) bypass - AE101
Im gusing its the same, its for a bigport redtop 4age into a suzuki using manual loom with an auto ecu
Re: Neutral Starter Switch (NSW) bypass - AE101
It seems to follow the same wiring as the MR2 5SFE/3SGTE diagram I have which is more detailed and in English. I assume you'd need to add a wire to the NSW pin on the manual loom and splice it into the STA wire as you don't have the plug and wires for the auto box.

Re: Neutral Starter Switch (NSW) bypass - AE101
Last night we were having a play with it and put the nsw pin into the ecu plug. Is the sta wire coming out of the ecu? If so we wil simply conect the 2 at the ecu end

Take the lid off the ECU and look at what pin is the STA. It should be labeled on the circuit board next to the pins. Similar to this.

The STA wire should be coming out of the ECU so if you have already put a wire on the NSW pin then connecting it to the STA wire near the ECU should work.
Just looking at how the circuit works. It appears that the NSW pin needs a 12v feed with the ignition switched to Start and STA also needs the same 12v feed from the same wire.

Re: Neutral Starter Switch (NSW) bypass - AE101
Ok so your saying sta and nsw both need 12v from another sorce? Thanks for your helr thus far! My dad and i have just put a 4age into ous suzuki sj410. The engine and loom (it was runing on a manual ecu but that had been submerged in water) came from another suzuki. So we are using an auto ecu for the same engine that i had lying around. The engine refuses to start so we are gona look at the wiring and firstly what is needed to use the auto ecu.. So it may be that i try and find a diagrame of what the ecu needs to run just the engine and we make our own up to make sure we have everything and all sensors in the right place

Re: Neutral Starter Switch (NSW) bypass - AE101
The STA wire gets it's 12v feed from the ignition barrel. (which should already be there) See the first diagram I linked. If you splice the new NSW wire you put in to the STA wire it should complete the circuit tricking the ECU into thinking it's in park or neutral. Then it should start if that is the only problem and the Auto ECU pins match the Manual loom.
When you say 'refuses to start' do you mean fire or crank? Not having owned and barely driven an Auto myself I am not sure what the park/neutral switch does to the ignition. I assume it stops the starter motor from cranking.

Re: Neutral Starter Switch (NSW) bypass - AE101
Thanks wil give that a try tonight! It cranks. Has spark. Has pressurised fuel in the fuel rail. Wont run tho. Getn new plugs today also. Im picking its sumthing electrial. Hopfuly its the netural switch!

Re: Neutral Starter Switch (NSW) bypass - AE101
Just reading your other post. I figured the NSW pin wouldn't help as that only stops the starter from cranking rather than the engine running. Sorry that didn't fix it.
