smokey - bad valve stem seals???

got this cheap ass ford festiva for a temporary runabout, 240 ish ks etc.

in the morning it smokes on startup, however sometimes it smokes a LOT more, billows of smoke, and then sometimes its a little puff for 5 or so seconds then its gone. once its all warmed up no smoke. its a blue smoke.

sometimes it leaks oil overnight too. but not always. its also going a little worse on gas mileage then i expected too (though im assuming it might be because the gearbox is half blown)

so im wondering, it COULD be dependent on where the camshaft has stopped when i turn the engine off weather it leaks or not? does this sound like bad valve stem seals?

hope its the valve seals because they are like what 30 bucks? if its rings i dont think ill bother.

im putting a new gearbox in it tomorrow that came with it, so i can have a good look around the outside of the block or something if anyone has any suggestions for something to look at.

sorry, when i said it could be depending on where the engine stops, i meant because i think theres an exhaust leak too and it would be leaking into the exhaust then out the leak of the exhaust

Valve stem seals make it smoke after high vacuum ie coming down a hill engine braking. Smoke on start up will be oil control rings. Just throw some 30w70 at it

really. damn, i really cant be $&#$% changing the rings hahaha

whats valve stem seals though, only like 30 bucks right? i guess i could change the seals and run some thicker oil in the mean time?

now i think about it, i do have access to a "honing stone" or whatever their called, the tons of little stones on strings that slide up and down the cylinder. whats rings like 100 bucks i guess? i could change them and leave the old bearings in, i cant see how that would make anything worse then it was before. unless their scathed up then i would change them.

was hoping i could runabout in this car for a couple weeks then try flick it off for a little profit, but i didnt realise the cam belt was done 120 kms ago til after i bought it as i was in a rush lol want to try get it up to scratch for as little as possible in hope of breaking even!

dont really care that the car smokes, i find it funny and it was just something to get me around in the mean time (i cant keep a straight face driving it around anyway) just would like to break even on it when i sell it. i wouldnt want to have "im selling you a car thats going to start smoking like a chimney as soon as you put some normal oil in it" in my conscience, so id like to fix the smoke and oil usage, as id be trying to sell it as a ideal first car/ runabout

Are you planning to put the rings on yourself? I don't think you should TBH. You may end up selling it for scrap value if you break it more. Just being honest. I wouldn't touch the engine personally, just be more thorough when checking cars in the future. I also wouldn't put stop smoke in it though lol I don't touch the insides of my engines either FWIW, so i'm not trying to pretend to know more about them. I just stick to what I know. I end up breaking less

could also be an issue with the pcv valve/breather system causing those symptoms

Wouldn't bother, just onsell it as is. Just clean the car before you sell it

haha sweet as. might just stick to some thick oil for the mean time!

i changed the gearbox on it today and noticed i think its actually leaking oil out the sump - no not due to some monkey reinstalling it improperly, i think the sump has actually rusted through!!! is this normal? well, not "normal" but is this an unusual thing to happen on older cars etc.

drove it around a bit after changing the gearbox and its actually not a bad little car, save for the smoke. im getting quite fond of it

my daily piece crap s14 used to smoke a bit (230ks sr20de) so i threw some cheap nasty 20w50 in and about half liter of that morey oil stabilizer and it stoped smoking and now uses hardly any oil, used to use about a litre every 4 tanks gas, hahaha

runs alot smoother too now since thers no unwanted oil getting burned up,

sweet, whenever i look at those sort of "quick fix in a bottle" things i tend to think they arent even worth the shelf space they take up

so is the fix smokey car ones can actually work? i might look into that oily stuff you mentioned and some thick oil.

damn, if im lucky enough to fix the smoke that easily, i think i will have gotten myself a good little car.

havent tried the "fix it in a bottle" either, dont trust it, haha but yes that morey stuff is awesome, i threw a 1/3rd into the old gearbox too and it shifts wayyy smoother and doesnt crunch much at all now, (poor old car)

not sure if youve seen the little 'gearset' they have at repcos n supercheap advertising the morey or lucas stabiliser stuff.

nope havnt seen the demo in repco/supercheap, ill look into the additive though.

does anyone know how i should repair a little hole in the sump? is there something i could seal it up with or do i need to weld/replace it?

i might dump some of this into it when its not leaking

Knead It. Buy it from Repco or SCA along with some degreaser to clean up around the leak. Follow the instructions.

sump is $15 at pinch-a-part.. and will stay fixed. Knead it is only a temporary option, I bet the resin goes soft once the oil gets hot.

40w 70, holy shit haha. It likely won't leak out of the hole in the sump if it's that thick

i think the 40-70 might be a bit over the top actually... might try some 20-50 and see how that goes.

I've tried thicker oil on cars with smoke on start up, also tried a couple of different stop smoke things. Total waste of time and effort.

Just $1 reserve it once you've got your new car, don't waste any money on it. They're a prick of a car to try to sell even when they're pretty tidy and don't have dramas. You'll not get much more for it with a non smokey vs smokey engine, so don't bother putting money into it, you'll never see that money again.

I think I only got about $1200 out of a tidy one with no engine dramas, with pretty decent km's. Was a while ago, so the details are fuzzy in my brain.

People basically see a "Ford" badge and then line up around the block to not buy it, or even ring about the ad.
