Leak!

Postby drift-monkey » Thu Jul 18, 2013 11:00 pm

Found a leak under the car (1JZGE JZX90).
Not engine oil leak, it looks like a clear kinda thing, thought it was water at first but when I put water on it it went that funny purple blue colour like oil does. Checked out power steering and it wasn't leaking, checked brake fluid, not leaking. Anything else I'm missing?

Any help appreciated

I could only ever dream of it being manual. Auto sadly, I checked the transmission fluid and it was pretty damn dark too, so I ruled that out as the culprit also.

Could it be fuel? Fuel line leaking somewhere? Or brake lines etc etc? It drips from the hole where the sump sits so its definitely in the engine bay.

From the firewall end or the other end? Could just be water from the aircon

It's further forward. Does it leave marks or anything? This is leaving visible circle patch where it's leaked. Will jack it up tomorrow and give it a proper look..

Your flux capacitor is leaking!

Where in relation to car parts is it? Could be washer fluid if you just topped it up. How much is there?
Btw if your auto fluid is dark it's well past a change

Toyota autos don't require fluid changes. Ever.

Edit - Pre-2000 anyway

awww, that means my plan to have an excuse for manual will take for ever!

Air con should only leak water/condesation. If it seems to be working it wont be refrigirant oil.

Am aware, but you wouldn't believe the number of people who come in for a water leak during summer... and say it's definitely not water. Just ruling it out ;)

Reminds me of a customer who thought he had a blown headgasket from the bubble showing up in the radiator. Turns out the washer fluid had been put in the radiator

Hmm I wouldn't recommend this :?

A water leak running over an oily engine can do this, picks up some of the oil on its way through, or could just be water getting in and running over the engine etc. Have you smelt it? Normally a good give away on what fluid it is.

Not a leaking shock absorber? Had a leaky tein once that somehow ran onto the undertray so at first glance the leak appeared to be engine related
