ae86 value

A mate of mine had what still remains in my mind as the nicest Trueno 86 I have ever seen. Was silver with awesome custom made old school looking dished mags, had this really awesomely done Porsche duck tale style spoiler and ran a lightly modded small port 4age (slightly uprated cams, intake, exhaust and an HKS ecu). Was his weekend car and I think I remember him saying he ran it mostly on av gas as dunedin didn't have 98 then.

Was only around 110-120kw atw but I think it must have had a closer ratio gear set because DAM it shifted through 1st 2nd and 3rd. Was about line ball with my RS legacy in acceleration which I thought was pretty good back then.

He offered it to me for 7k when he left NZ but I was only 18 and didn't have the money.

Stupid hindsight.

I hear it was brought and moved to christchurch but I have never seen it or heard about it since. Hope it is still around and not thrashed or crashed to death. Was the perfect 86 in my mind

I never really "got" there cars. Even in the mid 80's when they were newish there were better offerings in the 2 door, rwd variety (that's my opinion, other people's may differ). Cars like the supra, soarer, starion, skyline, etc, had more power, some had irs, better brakes, less prone to rust etc.

Why's the ae86 better than the 85? Better running gear?

This question indicates that you have no real understanding of
what an AE86 is, or why some "old cars" fetch more money than
their apparent worth. Do some research on any old "cult" car such
as the BDA Escort, XU1 Torana, GTHO Falcon or 327 Monaro, to
name just a few local cars.

Sure, they are just old Holdens or Fords, but they were used in
motorsports with considerable success. The AE86 had an enviable
record in racing and rallying at the highest level for many years.
It has its own series for Group N in Japan, multiple dedicated web
sites for enthusiasts, and is one of the most accessible RWD cars
for modifying and having fun at modest cost.

So educate yourself, and then give the finger to all the so-called
motorsports enthusiasts who only see an old Corolla

Yeah! i know the first thing i think about when seeing an AE8X is its glorious competition history where great men, competing in great machines, created great dynasties which will endure generations.

Actually not being totally honest.. the prevalent thought is - wasnt that car in some kind of .jp cartoon (with a decided lack of tentacle rape)? Popular Culture is what makes the AE8X series what it is. Like a DeLorean, Mr T's bad ass GMC van or a Lava Lamp.

Werent they all either significantly more $$$, or much heavier and poorly balanced? The AE86 was a good handling car for its time, and for its price bracket. A mate used to have one with a v tight diff and it was heaps of fun on gravel/open roads, but a bit shit around town. If you could still pick them up for $3k they'd still be a great car for a track toy/hoon mobile.

Just noticed a facebook post from a guy I know, dynoed his 86 this morning, 98kW at the wheels @8800rpm. With sidedraft carbs, and 297/9.6mm cams. I think lunchies 110rwkw is a little optimistic for a "lightly modded engine". Nice flat torque curve from 6k rpm to 8.5k.

lots of people would love to own an AE86, i'd happily have another. not everyone has equal amounts of money though, and because supply is only getting more limited that equals higher prices.

to some 12k+ is a snip for their 'hero car'. for me, like others, i see better bang for buck elsewhere. from a performance / drive-joy point of view they are ludicrously overpriced.

i would buy one if i won lotto or something though.
