Inline oil filter for turbo

Postby ~SlideWays~ » Mon Sep 09, 2013 1:46 pm

Hi all,

I've had a turbo die after a run bearing, so have replace the turbo but now thinking it might be worth fitting an inline oil filter to the oil feed line, especially since the engine is just about to start the run in km's.

Has anyone used one or have suggestions of suppliers?

What sort of micron rating should it have for a journal bearing turbo?

There are two on Trademe but no indication of a brand or quality.

Cheers

subaru use a gauze filter from std in a lot of their later motors, and its the prime cause of their turbo's dieing and it gunges up and blocks flow all together, so I'd be very careful about fitting a filter pre turbo myself

I wouldn't think it'd be nesscecary, doesn't the oil pass through the oil filter before it goes through the turbo?

That's interesting, in my situation the car gets an oil change a lot but as a precaution I could just take the filter off and clean it (if it can be).

I did think that but its tee'd off the block where the oil pressure sensor is on a 4age, I'd assume that is after the oil filter else the sensor wouldn't last long (tiny hole) but I don't know for sure.

Directly from the sump to pump to relief valve to filter to whereever in any wet sump engine you'll see.
It needs a turbo that doesn't conduct 175C+ heat into its bearing & lube when shut down, not a filter.

It needs lube that can take HIGH temps without gumming up OR a cool down period so the lube inside it doesn't get baked, take your pick.

Common upgrade for XR6 turbos as their factory turbo feed gums up and kills the turbo, but I don't think they're particularly necessary for your car Gav.

XR6 turbo and Territory Turbo both run gauze filters inside banjo bolts for the oil feed from the block, as mentioned above they get a bit gummed up, block the flow, and kill the turbo by starving it of oil.

For the gumed up filter, could take pressure differenial over the filter, high reading equals blocked filter. Its one of the auto checks we use at work

Or just clean it each time you change your oil.

Seems fairly simple to clean out the Forced performance filters :)
