Spark ignition boosters

Postby steroidcontaskie » Tue Dec 24, 2013 12:02 am

Hi all

My 2jzge turbo conversion is getting up and running and I am a bit concerned I may be blowing out the spark with boost and too much water methanol. Has anyone run an ignition amplifier like the hks twin power before? If so, are they worthwhile?

I would suggest running 98 always, and spraying less WMI, and not needing to boost the ignition.

Surely you dont need so much that you are going to be blowing out the spark.

What amount of boost are you planning on running to make you feel you might need to do this?

I will give that a go, I just don't want to end up with another problem when on the dyno.

What size nozzle(s) and how much WMI are you spraying, And at what boost level etc?

What was it doing on the dyno to make you believe there was too much WMI?

How much boost are you trying to run too?

Forgive my memory but are you still running 10:1 CR, or have you swapped in GTE HG/Pistons?

Hi all

I am still at 10:1 compression and the WMI nozzle flows at 600cc/min with a 50/50 mix

The WMI wasn't turned on when the gearbox failed on the dyno, it was still at the early stages of doing a non-WMI safe tune. I have set it to come on at 1psi and go max at 8psi while I am testing out the car as I was concerned with detonation. The car is also running rich, 13:1 Idle and about 11.5:1 between 200-4000RPM and is running on gull force 10 (98 octane 10% ethanol)

I have been testing the car with the new gear box (not revving it high) and sometimes it feels like I have left my foot off the gas even though I haven't, one time it has also backfired badly after doing that.

I am concerned I am having my spark quenched by the combination of WMI, boost and having a stock 2jzge ignition system.

Today I have changed the WMI settings to start at 5psi and go max flow at 15psi. I didn't feel the problem I had before, but I also didn't drive the car for as long (Had to fix a oil leak caused by a cheap turbo oil feed fitting). I am not sure about max boost, it depends how much the tuner thinks he can get out of the car with the WMI spraying, although I would be very happy if I could get 9psi (wastegate) with no WMI and close to 15 psi with it on.

Cheers
Edward

Get it tuned first. All the problems you're having could be down to the fact that it's basically untuned.

You definitely dont need to start spraying at 1psi, I would leave it off until atleast 10psi, then increase it from there until the point your tuner says its starting to detonate, and then turn the boost down a couple of psi to be safe.

Out of interest, have you confirmed your base timing is correct with a timing light?

I did check the base timing and it is correct.

I am planing on taking the car to get it tuned again, I just dont want to piss off the tuner if I get more problems. Going to have a word to him as soon as he is open again.

Good idea...dyno time is expensive, and very frustrating of you roll it off with no results :(

I would only focus on getting a safe pump fuel tune done first, and then, worry about the WMI once you already have a smooth running base to work from.
