Rattle in 4th and 5th

Postby shogun » Wed Jan 22, 2014 1:06 pm

Hi,

Anyone know what may cause a rattle under acceleration in 4th and 5th gears (very faint in 3rd)?

It happens on the road and when the the driving wheels are in the air. Its not the speed ie. doesnt rattle at 50kms in 2nd but rattles at 50kms in 4th. Doesnt rattle while in 4th but coasting. Car had been fine previously.

I thought it could have just been from an exhaust shield or something but it doesnt look like it.
Cant quite pin where abouts the rattle is coming from - sounds like its coming from everywhere.

Just seeing if anyone has any ideas before I swap the gearbox out.

AE101 corolla with a C56 by the way.

Cheers

Long shot - jack front wheels up, throw it into 5th and then hunt for the rattle under it. (while its on jack stands ofcourse)

Yea that's what I did, couldn't pinpoint it exactly but seemed like it was from the gearbox/clutch area but no where near certain (seemed like everything was rattling). Ill have another look tonight.

Gearbox bearing? My AE101 Levin sounds like a chainsaw in 4th and 5th.

hmmm could be the bearing. I had another go and I'm pretty sure it's coming from the gearbox so the bearing makes sense (why only in 4th and 5th though?).

Did you end up fixing yours?

I had noise in my car only light acceleration in 3rd and 4th.
Ending up two years later wheel bearing got really bad,
So I would do wheel bearing before touching gearbox
Also check muffler baffles being loose.

Update:
I removed the axles and tried 4th and 5th - no rattle! So it must be the wheel bearings? Strange that they only rattle in 4 th and 5th.

So ive taken the hubs off to try and get to the wheel bearings but I think you need a shop press to get them out so I'll do it tomorrow.

I'd have thought it would be pretty easy to hear the difference in location between gear box and wheel bearings.
More likely removing the axles has decreased the load so there isn't enough to make the rattle.

Yea initially I thought it was the gearbox. I think next I will try it with some different axles and hubs to try narrow it down.

Not sure, it's a puck clutch put in by a previous owner. I didn't look at it properly when I swap gearboxes the first time.

Did a quick search and the description of the noise is similar but mine does not rattle under deceleration.

wont happen under what most people would call deceleration,
it only happens at low in the revs where the load is on the boarder of the engine driving the car or the car driving the engine.

i.e. not in 2nd at 50kmh but will in 4th at 50 kmh

If it has a puck type in it, it sounds like it could be it.

On the lower level of the bearing, the balls and inner race were pitted.

long shot but does anyone happen to have one of these for sale?

"one of these" being a gearbox or bearing? Toyota/Saeco/SKF should have something available

Get the number off the bearing or take in sample. The Toyota number won't mean anything to aftermarket
