Shifter Cables

Postby Grrrrrrr! » Thu Jul 10, 2014 6:06 pm

Does anyone in Auckland have some corolla shifter cables with shagged bushes lying around? Trying to see if the same spherical bearing solution that i've found for the MR2 will work for the corolla, or other common FWD/4wd toyotas. From what I've seen Toyota doesn't sell replacement bushes, they make you buy a whole new cable ($$$), and the turned brass bushings others sell don't allow for movement due to the cables not being perfectly square to the pin.

Shagged bushes, the hole in the right one should be round:

Replacement bearings fitted in the cables:

So if someone has a set of shifter cables from an AExxx/EPxx/STxxx out of the car in Auckland and wouldn't mind me coming over and doing some measuring up of the cables (should take all of 10mins) drop me a PM. Or if you have calipers you could measure them up for me. Just need the ID and thickness of the steel ring at the end of the shifter cable (need to push the bushes out to measure) , and the thickness and ID of the bushes (if the bushes are flogged out like above a measurement of the pin on the gearbox would work, i'm hoping its 8mm dia, and bushes are 13mm thick)

I need to do this on my AE92 GTZ ones, they must be stuffed. But I'm in Wellington.

Out of interest, is there more play in those than a metal bearing?

You can't feel any play in them. Being plastic i'm hoping they should last forever and they wont rust, and do not need lubrication. Will be installing them in the mr2 tomorrow if weather and time permit, and doing an autocross on Sunday. Only concern I have is temperatures. Should be fine on normal road duties, but heatsoak off a hot turbo after a track session might not be so great.

Yeah I just did this today. Bearing shops here wanted around $30 each for a spherical bearing and none of them offered the PTFE coated (teflon) type, so would require periodic lubing. I ended up importing 10 from overseas, so if you want a pair just hit me up. Can do two for $40.

Seen too many snapped MR2 shifter cables after people used skateboard bearings in them. They don't allow the cable to twist like it does with the rubber in the OEM bushing.

Apologies for bringing up such an old thread. I have the same shagged shifter cable bushes that Grrrrrrr! had and was wondering where you guys got the spherical bearings from and what sizes?
