Turbo suggestions for TD42 diesel

Turbo suggestions for TD42 diesel
I know its not a Toyota and a diesel but I'm looking at options for a replacement turbo on my Safari.
Currently it has an after market manifold with a crap T3/T4E on it. Being a diesel it just too big to make power where you need it. Most people use T28's (possibly GT2860 I think).
Can anyone suggest a T3 flanged turbo that would be close to a T28?
Criteria:
- Something that can handle 15psi+
- Full boost before 2000rpm or close to it.
- Oil cooled only (would be a bit of a pain to run water lines).
Any help would be appreciated.

Are you on oldschool? Check out kpr's thread there - albeit I think it was an NA motor that they slapped a j pipe on and turbo'd.
Was your safari originally NA? Keen to know what you have done tbh, my inlaws have an NA td42 patrol I would love to put a turbo on - I use it more than them at the moment for towing/launching the boat when my falcon wont suit, but would need to set something up with a variator pump (not the correct term but it escapes me right now)

Yep originally NA, bought it as is two days ago. You might be thinking of boost compensators? They are really just to limit over fueling off boost, that's why you see clouds of black smoke on turbo converted NA diesels before they build boost.
I'm planning on upping the max fuel just a little, then use a water/meth injection kit when its on boost.
Turbo TD42 pumps can flow a bit more too, but they can be swapped or the standard Injection pump modified.

yup as above, our truck runs a s5 ht18, with wastegate welded, runs about 15psi, comes on boost about 2k,
na pump is fine, unless you want much over 100kw at wheels. then you'll need to drop 2k or so to get a modified pump. afaik the turbo pump wont give you anymore fuel, just has a compensator, unless you find a gu pump, the are spose to have a slightly bigger plunger in them.
some stuff on it in link in my sig, or look it up on oldschool

Cheers for that, found the thread and is an interesting read.
Something else interesting I've found is that the intake manifold is very restrictive and increasing the capacity is well worth it (off to pick a part!
I'm thinking about a Kinugawa TD05 16g maybe, I want it to spool very early but hopefully not choke at higher revs.
I wonder what sort of torque your (or your brothers) is making? Its all about the torque rather than peak kw's! I want to be able to tow my race car while over taking with ease

The exhaust manifold on mine is the same you can get on Trademe for $499. Its an OK design, better than a log manifold but its not tuned length individual pipes.
Basically ports 3 and 4 are nice curved steam pipe to the turbo.
Port 1 joins to 2 then 2 joins to 3.
Port 6 joins to 5 then 5 joins to 4.
As I say, better than a log but not the best design.
If I made one myself it would be nicer than that, but at the end of the day its not a race car

the factory turbo manifolds are spose to be pretty junk. the factory n/a one isn't bad, seemed to work pretty good with j pipe. sounds nice and crisp (for a diesel) with the new steam tube one on it.
have also heard that about the inlet manifold. if i owned the truck, i would probably make a new inlet manifold, and upgrade the injector pump.
gu pump is from the later shape safari with td42t, not very common. getting standard pump modified with 12mm? plunger and aneroid, would be the way to go.
for tuning the na pump. you want to wind the fuel screw in 1/4 turn at a time at the very most. probably go 1/4 turn first up then 1/8th if you need more.
you also need to adjust the throttle throttle stop. its kinda like a governor. backing the stopper off will give it more fuel up top. letting it rev a bit harder and widening the powerband. ours is setup so is making good power all the way till redline. then starts to taper off.
will try dig out old dyno sheet

this was old setup when we first got it going turbo, which was basically j pipe, ht18, 2.5" exhaust and fuel tuned up. throttle stop needed to be adjusted more here too

I have not heard of that turbo, thanks for the suggestion. I went with a TD05 16G, but a XANAXASSDSCXXXCHINAAPHETIMINE could be an option too perhaps?

Lol that dude is all about the Xanax. You have the Kinugawa on two of your cars now? How is it on the diesel?

Yep, the same Kinugawa turbo on both, there is a huge thread about these on one of the Australian Patrol/Safari forums. There are variations of people using the 6cm and 8cm exhaust housing and others using the 18G variants as well but you really need to upgrade the Injector Pump to supply enough to use the bigger turbo. (couple of $1000 to do Injector Pump properly).
It works very well on my TD42 with the fuel screw turned up a bit, it responds FAR better than the old T3/04B and revs out better too, even though I haven't made a new exhaust for it yet (only made 3" downpipe so far) so is restricted by the factory exhaust and no intercooling yet.
Even with just this and 10psi its a completely different thing to drive, EGT's are cooler and a much better power band.
Great turbo's for the money.
I have an S13 project now, maybe it needs a Kinugawa turbo too?!

Lol, maybe! We have had a HEAP of issues with the internal wastegate actuator on my mates SR20 one though, one of the reasons I didn't have much issue with recommending an externally gated one for your 4AGE as the turbo itself has been a weapon - its hit around 300kw on E85 with it WANTING to run more due to the actuator, its hit near 2bar at just over 3000rpm on the SR! Not many <$1000 turbos will do 300kw and spool better than the stock T28, let alone also be reliable

Is that the red S14? Holycrapingmoly that's impressive! Would he run that on the track though, or is it more of a 'what can it do' type thing?
FYI, my S13 isn't graced with an engine at all

Cheers mate but I went with a T3 flanged TD05 (this is an old thread, revived by spam bot selling...something... indecipherable)
