[quote="siren676"]While the engine was out drilled and tapped the sump for an oil return fitting.
All ready to go into the new shell tomorrow after work.

Wouldnt you want the drain to be as high as possible? I could see that causing you some problems in that position due to the sumps oil level stopping the oil draining.

Looking at that pic, I presume it is rear sump with the bowl hidden by the tyre it is sitting in so should be all good for drainage.

Yes its a rear sump bowl, made sure it was above the oil line, in hindsight I could have put it a bit higher but had to avoid the windage tray.

Sorry if pics huge, on mobile

I know nothing about the above. However, is that threaded into just the sump side wall? I just would have thought you'd want a nut welded on there to make it a solid connection. Just wondering :)

Yeah just threaded in there, 1/2" BSP taper thread, so seals on itself as its wound in

I would be loctiting a nut or socket on the inside end as brass and panel steel will expand differently , also as the thread is very course there won't be very many turns in the steel, this will allow the fitting to move and loosen over time.
You've seen what the return area looks like on a starlet , Toyota have strengthened the area for a reason , and they weren't expecting it to be treated like your going to
Other than that carry on the good work

"Understeer" is when you hit the fence with the front of the car.
"Oversteer" is when you hit the fence with the rear of the car.
"Horsepower" is how fast you hit the fence.
"Torque" is how far you take the fence with you.

Didnt have any proper loctite at the time so its just thread taped in there, sump is aluminum not steel which is why its not welded in

What I meant was get a brass socket or nut if you can find one and screw it on to the inside of the hose tail , ideally up against the sump with loctite. If a full socket is too long trim it down :-)

Get something like this:

Image

Preferably on both sides.

Any decent engineering or fastener shop should have them. Ask for 1/2" BSP Flanged Back Nut.
Preferably to get them in brass, but steel will also work, although for steel you will definitely need to locktite it.

Edit: I saw it is tapered thread, so if you are going to put flanged nuts on both sides (which is better than tapered thread) get a fitting with flat thread. It will cost you at most $20 for 2 nuts and a new fitting, but it is a better solution. The best solution is to weld an alloy fitting on there.

Any plumbing workshop will have them as well as they usually come on 1/2" ballcocks. And it's called a parallel not flat thread - just so you're asking for the right thing. You might also have to be conscious of electrolytic action between the brass and the aluminium sump. Can't remember which one will be sacrificial.....
See ya

Bit too late now, sump is on and engine is back in the car.
A lot of mx5 people have done it this way and not had problems.

With a few more hours of daylight left, I decided it would be interesting to wrap one of my spare engine covers (and here I was thinking the center console was a challenge, haha). This is the finished result:

The mighty car mods guys had this done to their MX5 by a professional workshop but some liquid metal was added. They never mentioned any issues with this method of installation.

Topped up the Corona to plan for the amount of oil it will leak, and drove it with 5 of us in it INV -> CHCH to pick up a friends new to him RX-8, got treated to an old man changing his pants on what we could only guess is a main street of CHCH, saw items on display that should never be on display, and then fled CHCH back to invercargill again

While we had full mechanical Sympathy for the Corona, including stopping every 250km to check fluids and stretch legs, we were wailing on that wee 3T-GTE, it did incredibly well even with a fully laden car and was able to spar with the best of them, even the likes of Jumped up Falcon XR6 drivers who thought they were hot shit, on the Kilmog hills they could either not catch us, or could not leave us behind, we were able to keep a perfect 100kmh pace the entire trip no matter what got thrown at us, and the car took it without a single complaint, it got us there and back in a single day and I can probably now say its going to be reliable now

The RX-8 is pretty cool too, although the new owner is a wee bit timid with it and keeps trying to short shift it everywhere, basically the opposite of how it wants to be driven, but that will change when he gets frendlier with it over time

Got my new MIG welder all setup today, haven't done too much welding with it yet but very happy with it so far.
Stripped off the sound deadening from the firewall and drive tunnel and prepped the new tunnel to go in.

Also practiced a little bit of 1st aid as I managed to slice my thumb quite nicely, while working with the sheet metal.
