FWD/LSD gearbox fluid?

just wanting to know what fluid I need for a front wheel drive lsd gearbox? It's an E-56

Theres no "special" fluid, but you need a certin grade (which i dont know exactly)
I use Redline 70W80 Synthetic , nice n' smooth :)
90 Celica GTR Turbo
184kw @ 14psi at the front wheels (Now running 17psi watch this space for dyno :) )

Either LSD oil to protect the diff and wear out the syncro's
or
VMX or similar gearbox oil to wear out the diff and protect the syncro's.
And old problem that AFAIK has no real answer.

Should be tommo, dont know which type tho, more than likely viscous

But dont run LSD oil, as its designed for rear diff LSDs NOT gearboxes

if it's viscous you don't need lsd oil.
I run castrol syntrax ($90 per 4 litre pack 8O ) and i run torsen lsd.
Royal oil's have just brought out a transaxle lsd oil!!!

From what I've heard you dont need to run any form of LSD oil in a TorSen diff as it relies on a clever series of gears to split torque, rather than clutch packs which require friction modifiers found in LSD oil

which is excatly the reason i run synthetic gl5 gear oil which is what the syntrax is and has no lsd property's

Redline is GL5 as well, costs roughly $25 a litre

true, but if its a stock toyota lsd then itll be viscous, not torsen/helical type

some come out with a stock torsen if its optioned
viscous dont matter as they are a sealed unit
unlikely it will have a clutch type as stock but trd do make a retrofit one

syntax gl5 is a good oil

If you use ATF it will be fine whatever type of LSD you have. If you use a gear oil and do some how have a plate LSD you will stuff it and it will not work properly.

what models? i havent found any yet....
ae86 had clutch pack so did some chasers etc, ae92, 101 and 111s had viscous coupling as did jza80 supras mr2 etc etc

TRD do either helical (torsen) or clutch pack type. both for some models

glanza v has the factory option
ae101 has the factory option
111 as well
gt4/s have a torsen in the rear as factory
supras have a torsen in the rear as stock as well

this info comes directly from toyotas own parts database
if you wish to argue it go talk to waikato toyota its there system i use

then tell uen to take out the factory torsen out of his 101
yes hes actually seen it out of the box so hes sure

i have been looking for a replacment for my mr2 diff and so have resurched this quite a lot

the viscous will not fit in the c52 or c56 due to its size hence the torsen
the gtz box is basically the same as the sw20 box so is viscous

im sure the JZA80 manuals do and optional on autos - and iknow for sure my JZA70 has a torsen stock....

i was told to use half ATF and half LSD oil... may have been for shits anfd giggles but yeah :o

ok first up i dont need to call anyone at waikato... i have the epc right here in front of me...

second, just to clarify that we are all talking about the same things here:

helical/torsen as done by TRD and quaife..... gear type lsd

clutch pack lsd... uses clutchs to limit slip

viscous........ uses fluid

when looking up the epc it doesnt tell you if its helical or viscous type, no way to tell that acuratly from the epc, it just shows a complete centre unit. some of which look more like vicous than not. you can tell if its got clutch pack as the shims are seperate parts. so i retract what i said about supras, never had one apart. for the 70series it shows both clutch pack or what could be either viscous or helical. in hindsight i would lean towards helical as they tend to be a better unit to use with heaps of power.

as for the 'e' series box i have never heard of or seen a factory fitted helical type. have done so with viscous though, that would also explain why the 'c' lsd boxes use normal gear fluid, the viscous is sealed and has its own fluid encased within. having said that though, i believe some helical units can also use normal fluid.
viscous are far more common as fwd diffs, they dont have the torque steer of other styles
if you pull apart a 'e' series and its got a helical type then chances are its an aftermarket one. congratulations.
