3SGTE cams

Post by Boosted_162 »

Having a nosey at some HKS 272 degree cams for sale at the moment 2nd hand. Now im a complete noob when it comes to cams . Now, i have a gen 3 3SGTE, which is shim-under-bucket unlike early 3SGTEs if im not mistaken? What about gen 4? (ST215).

Now my main question is, if cams are designed for one head setup (eg gen 2) are they able to be used in a later one? (gen 3). It looks like the cams were used/to be used in a GTT head, can i use them in my gen 3?

Cheers :D

Alright, got an answer thanks to Chris/iOnic.

Just for others, basically all gen 2-4 cams are interchangeable regardless of shim arrangement, the only difference between them is the gen 2-3 engines require a notch in the end of the cam for the distributor, whereas the gen 4 does not have one due to running coil on plug ignition.

If anyone has any corrections or info to add, please feel free :D

I'm pretty sure the gen 1 (st165) heads have smaller diameter buckets and wont accept gen 2+ cams.

Yep Gen1 cams aren't interchangeable with later Gen engines (and vice versa)

caldina st215 intake cam needs the cam sensor trigger bolted onto the end of the cam (where the notch for dissy would be on gen 2 and 3)

yes

i dont think you can use st215 cams in your st205 motor, because i think the intake cam is slightly shorter where the sensor trigger arm is bolted on, so you wont have enough meat to cut for the dizzy slot.
i might be wrong but best to check as i remember telling a friend it looked shorter.

go to this page, scroll down to the pics of the cams in a st215 and you can see the trigger arm,

are these second hand cams cheap? because your prob better off with the HKS 264 cams, they give the best power up throughout the rev range without loosing out anywhere,

Yes they were relatively cheap, i got them with a bunch of things, Cams, camgears, valvesprings and a set of eagle rods for under $2K.

And these cams had been used in a gen 2 first so they will work sweet.
