4age iratic idle

Postby skoty » Tue Aug 03, 2004 8:43 pm

Sorry if its already been posted before, but what causes a 4age such as mine to idle iratically, ie 1100-1600rpm?

I mean it idles iratically such as continuously going up and down from 1100-1500rpm, seems a lil weird.

Starlet did that when it started to overhead once. And also did it because of a vacuum leak (inlet manifold gasket). Check all ya hoses and whatnot

mine idles high at the moment too. put your head out the window and sounds a bit like a rotor. have a look at the temp gauge, i thought mine was just broken but i now im under the impression the thermostat is broken so the ecu sends a rich petrol/air mix because it thinks the car is cold, so the car runs rich, uses more gas and i think can cause the idle to naff up a bit. but if your temp gauge reads normal then i would say you may be able to rule that idea out.
good luck

yea if ya temp reads low most of the time change the thermostat done mine afew weeks ago and the old thermostat was dated 1993  since the ecu thought it was always cold idle would be around 1500-2000rpm all the time

Id start by replacing the termostat its cheap and easy todo ya dont need to fully drain ya coolent, what mine did was in open road an stuff itd run cold then in slow traffic itd heat up... since the termostat cant have been sealing fully itd always be cold.... so cold vvt wouldnt work

It doesnt do it initally, after idling for like 2 minutes. Oh yeh my thermostat broke, so I removed it and didnt bother replacing it  ... thought it was ok not to have a thermostat as they are mainly for cold as countries where its impossible to start an engine up with frezzing water running through it! So the thermostat is most likely the prob?

hey

itll be ur idle speed control valve.

Either will be blocked with rust or be an airlock in it.

is located under throttlebody. pull it off and blow it out with compressed air then refit, fill car with coolant and bleed cooloing system

as i said above, my thermostat is broken. How hard is it to get to on a 20V silvertop? worth getting the mechanic to do, i understand the part is only about 20-30 $$ and a bit of labour so maybe a $100 all up doesnt seem that much but if its easy to do maybe id do it? anyone know or have done it before? cheers.

easy... If ya coolent is ok just open the drain plug an take some out into a bucket so the water is just below the head level, the thermostat is under the distributor.. unclip the plug for the temp and undo the two bolts an pop the housing off... pull the thermostat out put the new one in... make sure you line the little air bleed up with the top bolt, put everything back put ya coolent back in an keep toping it up as the air bleeds out.

Be careful that the thermostat housing doesn't leak afterwards, could get expensive if you cook something.
