Turbo For A 3Y? (Yeah, I can hear you saying 'WTF is a 3Y!?)

Postby Muzzie » Sun Aug 22, 2004 1:10 pm

87 Hiace, got a 2.0litre 3Y motor, bored out slightly. I've seen other Hiaces with 'Turbo' plastered across the back, always assumed they was diesel, but saw one the other day that didn't sound like a diesel, smell or look (exhaust smoke) like one, and there was no RUC card on the windscreen, so I assume it must be a petrol one.

Anybody know if thats true, and if so, can I just bolt on the turbo to give my Hiace some more go?

Thanks

nah the Y series engines are designed for commercial use, i doubt they would have ever made a turbo model, plus its not really worth turboing your 3Y, itll take so much work and not give that much more power

cams, slight head work, side-drafts if fit-able (its a van!) extracters if available (its a 3Y!)
Ive worked on a 4Y (2.4l) and those engines respond well to basic mods

Question I now have to ask is....

2.5l 1JZGE or GTE, Or Lexus V8 - will it fit?, and easily?. I'll have to get a new geabox too, and I want a manual.

At least with something with some grunt I'll be able to pull my racecar around easily. Poor van struggles a bit at the moment.

And it doesn't sound too bad - they have a common fault where they leak around the downpipe (which mine does) and around 3000rpm it sounds beautiful in my humble opinion.

1JZ will be easier then the V8 because of the width,
but they both will require lots of custom work.

Whats a 1JZ out of? Fuel injected I assume? I just like the space and practicality and originality of an older model Hiace, but its really too gutless for its own good.

I realize it will need a hell of alot of modification work, but is it doable for a reasonable price? I'm a student at present, looking for work (if anyone has anything!? I don't care what!) so it'll be a while before I do anything, but I wanna start saving now.

I'm gonna make that van go quick and look good .......... Or Bloody Well Die Trying!

A mate of mine put a supercharger on his 3Y. It went quite a bit harder too!(For a 3Y!) He used a s/c of a 4agze, running about 6psi I think, headers, and 40mm carb (suck through setup). had to get inlet mani modded, custom crank pulley and some custom brackets. Didn't touch internals. Oh, plus converted dizzy to electronic and some timing setup to compensate for boost. Cost about $1200 all up, he doing most of the work. Worth it? Decide for yourself.

Now that's what I'm talking about! Cheap power :) I wouldn't be doing much work myself because I haven't got the equipment, but surely it wouldn't cost too much more than that to have the work done. Now I just gotta save up so I can do that lol

But first, some mags and tints, then the exhaust and then the above probably :) Then i'll no doubt blow the gearbox, so I'll put in a Manual and be more than pleased :)

Woooohoooooooo. A plan emerges!

Wooooooooooooooohoooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!

EFi as well? Hmmmmm, might needa investigate that. Mines an 87 Super Custom Limited, has the elctrical curtains and stuff too.

Wonder what it's worth to change the intake for the EFi and bolt on a turbo? Gotta decide whether to Supercharge or Turbocharge :) But first things first - a job!

Yes please, that'd be a great help!

Thanks JJD

ANother thought, I'd have to change the head as well to allow for different compression ratio, and where is the Fuel pump on the EFi model? Mine is carbed and currently on the block. I assume the pump for EFi would be in the tank?
