Bearings?

Postby sprint » Sun Aug 29, 2004 10:22 pm

Was out at puke today and on my last lap a rattling sound was coming from the engine. Tried to drive home but got about 20 mins along the way and deciede to get it towed. It seemed alright at about 2500 rpm as long as you kept a constant acceleration. On start up it rattles alot but once it settles down (3-4 secs) to idol it sounds ok. When the car is under load it also rattles. Anyone got some ideas on what this could be the car is a GZ20 Soarer with a 1G-GTE.

Cheers

So that means the engine will need to come out to fix it?

troublr id you wont be abile to clean out all the sludge thats in the oilways or in the head

its ok to change the bigend before they die like that
but to do it after is just asking for trouble

do it once do it right

Apart from first thing on a cold start (until the oil pressure builds up) big end rattle usually relates to load. At 3000 rpm and throttle barely cracked open, there is hardly any load on the bearings, and the noise goes away. Let it slow down to 1500 rpm in a high gear, and then give it a bit of throttle.... that will load up the engine and should get your bearings rattling nicely

Has anyone replaced the big end bearings by just taking off the sump?

We did on our 1GGZE celica motor although they were done as a precaution after 2 race seasons and had not actually run a bearing.

if its knocking its not good, possibly spun a bearing, if a bearing has spun, crank will need a grind at the least, generally there $&#$%,

you can do a bearing roll in place, but if its spun or started to its pointless.

ye sumps can be a cuntt, coz of all that RTV. U need a sump cutter, which is like a blade u hammer inbetween sump and block, and hammer along, which would be hard if engine is in car now i think about it.

be rough, its just a sump, just make sure it seals when u finish.

use a plastic hammer and hit the sides of the sump, oor a big screw driver, try not to pry it too much, dont use a chisel u will $&#$% it.

there is no gasket as such just the silicon and its thick
you will know if its spun because when u pull of the cap the bearing wont come out, or if its bad the cap and con rod will be black from heat, use a torch and look for rods that are excessivly diferent from the rest in colour

Does anyone know what torque to tighten up the bolts on the conrods that hold the big end bearings? Engine is a 1GGTE.
