AE92 fxgt headlight warning thingie - please help!!!

Postby gordon77 » Sat Jan 01, 2005 3:47 pm

hey ive got a 91 fxgt. it has or had a little speaker of some sort in the dash that emited a warning tone when you opened the door and the headlights were still on  . this was working fine (good thing to have) but a few days ago it just stoped :? . i have the car manual but the wiring diagrams dont have anything about a warning system for the headlights that i can test or find.
is this dead forever or can i fix it? if so how to?

thanks ppl

That warning has saved my ass so many times...

I would try and find the speaker that makes the tone, then trace it back to where ever it goes.

same for me... ive always gone, FUX)R and ran out, crank it and you can almost hear the starter motor screaming *ONE FUXING LAST TIME DAMNIT*.

as she revs into life :)

never have an alarm armed when ur drainging ur battery... try unlock the door
still enough power to use the alarm, BUT NOT TO TURN IT OFF.

In my AE82, behind the stereo was a small box hanging down with a couple of cables running to it - it had something like 'buzzer' written on it. I think this was the headlight warning thingy - I can't be sure (this was 6 years ago), but I remember unplugging it thinking it was the >108km/h warning buzzer only to find it was for either the headlights or door open.

So, although this info's for the AE82, and my memory's not so good - it could be a good place to start to just pull out the stereo and see if there's a small box behind it and check if one of the cables has worked its way out :)

It's not there, as I've had the stereo out in my old ae92 FX-GT many times. I would say that it's part of the actual dash some where, so it'll be a pain to get at and fix.

The easiest way is to become friends with an auto electrician

well i have had the dash totally apart replacing the top that had cracked, i wasnt looking specifically for a buzzer of some sort but i didnt see one.
here is one twist to the story tho, last night i turned the car on and put my lights on but there was no dash lights for any of the guages, they still worked but just no illumination. there was also nothing for the centre console (heater, a/c stuff like that) either. :? oh yeah - all the warning lights come on when you stall it (purposely) and the indicator things work too and and also the highbeam light. :?
i did pull the stereo out the other day and redo the wiring with proper connectors (the previous owner had taped the bare wires up  )
maybee i some how cut something without knowing and it was a power thing to the dash

just setup what i was going to do >.> run your headlight switch, through a relay, hooked up the through the ignition.

so your headlight switch (on / high etc), will only work when the ignition is set to "on" :). so, leave lights on, turn off car, lights turn off :D

ok ok found blown fuse. i replaced it with same spec fuse (15amp) and it blew straight away when i turned the lights on with the door open. the buzzer thing buzzed for a nanosecond and then stoped (blew the fuse)
maybe a grounding problem??

haha, you took the whole dash out, to find out it was a fuse??
how does it feel?

na what I'D do is chuck a 20 amp in its place, if that dont work, I'D just get over it. wouldnt waste my time.

but if you really want it fixed, just wire up another one, to a light or sum? Just splice into the headlight feed, and use the same switch as the interior light.
piece of cake

or as cozmo said, just run the headlight feed through a relay, controlled by the ign switch, so theirs no need for the warning buzzer.

or you could rip the dash out again and have another look..

um no... if you are able to read properly above i took the dash out to replace the top - nothing to do with the problem i have now.

i thought about replacing the fuse with a 20amp but didnt know what kind of implications that would have... the fuse is for my instrument lights as well so i cant see shit at night time. gotta hold the old phone up to the dash to check what speed your doing :?

heh replaced the fuse with 20amp, blew that straight away. replaced it with 30amp. blew that pretty much straight away

i have some U shaped spade connectors that will most likley fit into the slot nicley but i dont wanna go and screw any components in the circuit. is this a good idea or not.
reason for asking is coz i really need the circuit to work as my tail lights work off it. beeing a black car i will become pretty hard to see at night time...

DONT DO THAT!!
the curcuit will just have a short to ground somwhere. Just inspect the wires and connections. A multimeter with audio continuity check will be very handy when finding the short.
