LPG vs Pump

Postby _will_ » Sun Feb 27, 2005 9:16 pm

Does anyone know what the performance differences between LPG and normal pump petrol?
I've heard that LPG has a higher octane rating, but not sure if it gives greater performance?
Also, what is the cost of setting up for LPG, and does it affect the engines longevity?

Cheers!

LPG is a popular fuel choice for performance v8's in the USA, google it and you should find heaps of results.

You can't use LPG in motor race events, for safety reasons, as (among other reasons) LPG heavier than air, and often doesn't disperse in the event of a leak.

There was one dude who was campaigning for LPG to be allowed into motorsport for several years. He now runs his car on pump gas, and I understand he has been quoted as saying that his car has never gone better since changing to petrol.

Draw your own conclusions ...

You can use if for off roading (you know, those buggies and big 4wd things), if that was the style of racing you were looking at, but that's about it. But nothing that's permitted under MotorSport NZ.

i believe the problem with LPG is that although it has a higher octane rating, it comes into the engine in a gaseous form, rather than liquid, like normal petrol does, so you get less mass of fuel and less power from burning it.

with a properly set up CNG or LPG system, you can have HUGE gains.

but you need to have it set up right,

not just a poor job of getting a Petrol system to run gas.

LPG and CNG have the similar cooling effects as Nitrous Oxide (not the same level of change in torque)

and due to its gaseous state and Higher octane (and the Pressure that you can inject it into the engine under)
It responds very very well to high boost environments.

Over in Australia they have a company called Gas Research, they make performance Gas conversion kits,

they have _THE_ fastest NA's around, (I'm talking for the average joe blow, not specialised applications either)

We are talking HQ Kingswood, with a Gas research manifolds, ported Black motor Head, running straight gas = 160.2 rwKw

Its all about how you use it.

and Also, you can Use LPG as a fuel for Drag racing over here, (just not anything else)
