EVEN if it did cost more to make a RWD, which I can't see how it would, you just drop the chassis down over the drivetrain and engine, suspension etc. EVEN if it was cheaper, it wouldn't be cheaper if noone brought it right?
With FWD you get more interior space, it's much quieter (much less gearbox and diff noise) the handling is much more predictable and you get beter fuel economy. FWD often tends to be lighter too, so the car handles more nimbly.
I think trying to convert FWD to RWD is a silly idea, as the manufacturer already spent millions designing a FWD chassis to handle well etc, if you just go $&#$% around with that, and don't spend millions of dollars designing it, you might end up with somthing crappy.
I'd recomend just starting with a RWD car.
And I don't think converting a 4WD to RWD is a good idea either, as you have the added weight of 4WD, but you don't have the advantages of 4WD.
