The problem with going very low, no matter what kind of struts/shocks/springs you use, is the changes in suspension geometry. On MacPherson strut suspension, once the lower control arm goes past horizontal you will get positive camber on any further suspension travel, such as when you're cornering at speed. This is very undesirable! If you really want to go low and get good handling, you need to look at your suspension design, look into roll center adjusters, and have a look at the bump steer characteristics, as you will often find that when you go very low, the region of normal suspension travel experiences severe bump steer.
