additional to vvega's post, have you adjusted the idle speed at all?- if you have stepped it up higher at all, this tends to make it louder.
Cant believe im still a member here.

First gear does have a syncroniser. Just pull the $&#$% out, strip it and learn something.

So tell me vvega, what do you think the syncronizer unit is there to do?
It does two things:
It prevents gear clashing during shifting
It locks the output gear to the output shaft.

To select first gear, the sleeve of the first gear synchroniser is moved forwards by a selector fork which fits into the groove of the sleeve. This operates the synchroniser before the teeth on the sleeve engage the dog teeth on the first gear. With the dog clutch engaged, the first gear is locked to the mainshaft.

Straight out of my automotive text book.

And by the way, I'm a Toyota dealership technician.

lol i know who you are and what you do i even know how long youve been doing it
perhaps you might even remeber chatting to me for hours on msn

IMO it acellerates the gear to match the output shaft speed and allows teh dogs to aling and mesh
i guess its how you look at it aye
ps i just bought that gt4 back again and reconing the motor as we speek

are you sure the first has the synco hub
i dont recall ever seeing one on the cluster :S

Does 1st not having syncros apply to most cars or just this box?

I know of some cars have syncromesh in reverse (Some Audi's..) Just curious....

Also Perv my k50 makes a similar noise when going into reverse, not all the time, like yours. Its a real metal clunk... noise... Been doing it ever since I had the car though...

lots of cars do have a synco on reverse
normally when you hear a clunk your idle is to high or you moving when your sticking it in there

many boxes do not have 1st gear syncros reason been i guess .when do you stick it in first when your driving ??
or shift down to first while your moving

and been the fact this is a k40....early 80's late 70's box ........ its not really a modern luxery box ethier

Don't know what causes it, but in each toyota I've driven(85 corolla, 93 Hilux, 95 Curren, 87 Corona, 01 Corolla) have all made a noise when putting them into reverse... the only way I found around it, is to clutch-in, select 2nd gear, then select reverse, and got no noise since... it has become my standard "going into reverse" gear change.

Exactly the same for me. 89 hilux, 89 corona, 92 corolla. They will all make the clunk going into reverse if you dont go to 2nd and then to reverse.

Yeah same with me as well aye. I tried saying that earlier on a few posts back and just got shot down. I thought it was a Toyota thing and all of them did it because all our Toyotas have done it.

Does everyone on here have reading comprehension problems?

Yes, cars clunk when going in to reverse, but no, they don't clunk and grind at the same time...

It was a clutch issue, and Cozmo, I thought I told you no-one needs your advice...taking mechanical advice from you is like a asking a blind man for directions...

Yeah thats what all our cars do. A sort of grinding and whirring. Thats why I thought it as normal. I guess not but they do stop when you do that second gear first thing.

FYI: Blind people are normally really good to ask for directions, they can usually give you pinpoint accuracy on where things are, and amazingly what to look out for.

ie: go through 3 intersections, turn right, go through two intersections, past the school on your left, turn right.

They seem to take more in... no idea why, maybe they need to.
