Which is where the GTT lets the team down... Its reliance on 98 octane would be a PITA, as it isnt available in a lot of small towns.

I dare say that you could run it on 96 without a hellova lot of drawback on an as-required basis.
I ran my GT4 on 96 briefly and it didn't complain very much at all, that was with an effectively empty tak, put $5 in it and then drove to a 98 octane stn. ;-)
Car didnt even hiccup for the trip, though. Expect with smooth open road driving you wouldn't notice it much.
well i drive my GT-T on 95 non-stop as stupid taranaki doesnt have 98 at all :( and i believe that Farmer_Dave did the same thing

Yeah, I suspect the 'must use 98' bandwagon just keeps getting jumped on by those who feel they have an excuse ;-)

I used 98 by choice and made decisions that allowed me to time my trips past 98-selling stations. Ala, Auckland-Wellington I filled my tank in Taupo both directions...

But to go back to the point of this thread, its a nice looking ride, a shame its not a Toyota but having spent a little time in some recent Holdens, theyre not that bad...

No GT4s ever came with the gen 4 3sgte.....

Gen 4s run higher compression, and from the little that I have heard about them, tend to go bang rather easily. :?

Correct, was a Gen2..
And I find it somewhat 'interesting' that the Gen4 3SGTE is 'that' picky...

What do you expect, it's a Holden, and before anyone thinks about beating up on me about that comment, I own one (1995 HSV) so I can back it up with a looong list of problems

Anyway it's a race between Holden and Ford as to who has the longest recall list, Ford was winning for much of the 90's and early 2000's but they're getting better now

well, you do own a ferrari and sw20.... so i guess a holden would fit in with your love of having to fix your cars all the time :P

Well that would be true if I could actually work on my Holden. Alas it's in Australia and I lack the facilities, so I have to pay to have it repaired, which is probably why I don't use it much these days.

The Ferrari is supposedly one of the more reliable ones, I'll find out if I ever get it on the road.

Apart from the occasional clutch, and blown engine caused by my own stupidity, my SW20s have been very reliable. The same can't be said for the Caldina though appears i now need to rebuild my right rear shock :(

Anyway they've all proved far more reliable than any Ford I've had anything to do with :P

i just figured for the price, youd expect something that dosnt leak within 10 years of buying the vehicle :D. Especially after all these years of learning from their mistakes ;).

In my current ride it make 2/5s of f*ck all difference between 95/6 and 98, however in my old Subaru Grand Wagon, it made almost an almost 10% fuel economy difference, going to 91 also made it heaps worse on gas round town(assume full tank 55L 98=~410km, 95/6=380km, 91=340km)...

incidentally, the RunX gets ~440 off a tank(50L) round town, and ~680 on a trip, guestimate based on only having 640 on it, and I'm back in town with a 1/8 tank.

You'd be surprised...one thing I definately know is most of the newer Holdens has tremendous problems with their radiators and teh rest of the cooling system.

As soon as a new range is released Jason (Works @ South Auckland Radiators) gets in a new shipment of radiators for them as the demand is so big...

Problem is Holden/Ford are pumping out so many newer models and cutting back on production costs they don't do the job the way they used to anymore...

Not really no, there are other factory high powered v8's in the world besides the constant ford Vs holden battle.

Well, I cant comment any further, as I have never owned a Gen 4 3sgte, or any 3sgte for that matter.

But I do recall Fivebob saying something on the matter, regarding caldinas, 96 octane, and having spare pistons handy.

P.S. What is the CR for a caldina engine?

It doesnt say on that engine site.

lol thanks for all the comments well the positive ones anyway :)
From what I can see the quality of this car is miles ahead of the caldina (although the caldina was a good car) The performance is way ahead also 6 speed manual :) I love it.
Anyway each to their own if we all liked the same thing it would be a little boring peace
