FAQ me

Alright, it's apparent the faq section of this board is extremely lacking. I know the moderators are all extremely busy in the Off Topic section, and don't have time for trivial things like compiling useful information for the FAQ section, so I've done it for you.

I think the following threads (or parts of them atleast) should be FAQ'ed.

there is actually a 3sgte specific thread there but it only has the gen 4 differences and how the gt-t bov works

Have they finished being discussed though? I had left that tyre contact patch one until it had been well thrashed out, as you can't add to a thread in the FAQ section.

If so, they can all get FAQ'd

most of them are pretty old, the tyre one I think can have nothing more useful added since fivebob's excellent post from racecar eng. mag. Anyone that tries to add anything is just going to bring the tone down (as you can see in the later posts )

Some threads have some excellent FAQ worthy info in them, yet this info is on a tangent off a tangent of the original thread title.

I think it is unfortunate that some of this information would not be considered for the FAQ, simply because it lies within a mess of thread topics.

For example:

The other day, I was looking for some info for Malcom, regarding 3sge blocks cracking.

What did I search for? 3sge? block crack?

No. Quad throttles.

Why? Because I knew that from memory, this info was in a thread about quad throttles ages ago.

Info like this is great for the FAQ IMO, but it would never be considered as it lies on page 3 or 4 of a thread that was going all over the place.

Would it be possible to make a faq post, with just the relevant information? Most of the time it is only 1 or 2 posts within a large thread that goes all over the place.

Maybe if people have a particular area of interest or expertise or even just know where in the forum good info is they could summarise it then pass it on to a mod with the appropriate links to back it all up? Spreads the work around a little and makes the mods life a bit easier.

Yeah there doesnt really seem to be an official way to nominate a thread for FAQ....

Might be an idea to clarify this a bit.

To be honest I think the idea of moving threads into a FAQ section where they can't be contributed to, or editied by the original posters, has to be one of the most ill considered concepts I've come across. e.g. The thread on the GenIV differences is missing a lot of pictures and as I no longer have access to the server they were loaded on I cannot load them back up even if there was space. However if I had access to edit my original posts I could change the img tags to point to my new web space.

If you want a FAQ section then pehaps it might be better for someone to extract the useful info, and copy any relevant pics to an area where they won't be lost and leave the original threads intact. I know it's more work for someone, but at least it would make the FAQ section more professional and people wouldn't have to wade through pages of drivel and missing pics.

if any regular poster was allowed to post into the FAQ section, but it was carefully moderated so rubbish didn't get posted in there, and discussions weren't carried on in threads (unless of benefit to the original thread), that would not only make it easier for useful information to be put in there, but would allow threads to be added to/altered as you've suggested.

or some more knowledgable members of the forum could be put into a group and that group given moderation permission over the FAQ section, that would mean a larger number of people could contribute to the FAQ section and alter posts in there, while not making it a free-for-all

Just change the permissions on the FAQ forum...

Set it so that only moderators can create or move threads into it but users still have the ability to post on that thread.

This will just exclude people from creating threads in teh FAQ section but they can still contribute to already existing threads that have been deemed worthy of being moved into the FAQ section...

Only issue with making users able to add to faq posts would be some knobs WILL just post on a faq saying 'my car does bla bla bla, is this it?'- regular users wont, but some new people, being new post all over the show.
Essentially I guess it would just mean moderating/editing it more. Perhaps have someone just to mod the faq only & keep it tidy and on track?- the idea of still being able to add correct and useful info into the faq is a good one

Yea that's basically waht I'm suggesting.
No one can start a thread...they can only add posts to an existing thread.

And then a couple of extra users can have mod-rights to ONLY the FAQ section to controll the sort of information that is being placed in there and make sure it stays on track otherwise users have to go and use the Tech section to get answer to their queries if they aren't contributing to the thread int he FAQ... (If that makes sense?)
