It bolts to the head surface of the block and when talked up pretty much puts the block under the same tension as when the head is bolted on.
So this means that when you bore and hone a block with the plate on you can ensure that the bores will stay perfectly round when the head is bolted back on, when you take the plate off the bores can go slightly out of round.
I dont really think you need to do it, if its a fairly stock engine but im just trying to build the best engine i can afford to.

Still don't actually know its purpose tho.

A head will stretch and contort a block.
You want all your bores to be straight and round when the head is installed.
You can't bore through a head.

As such a torque plate is installed to stress the block to simulate the installed head. Then you bore with the torque plate in place.

Its a minor effect, however very important when attempting to get everything from an engine.
The answer is Helmholtz!

is that possible to bore the engine upside down?... using a "spare head" bolted onto it? so you will get the same effect?? :P

I don't think head on would work, would end up leaving a lip at the top of the bore.

Well it would be possible to bore the block not ideal though and you wouldn't be able to hone it using that sort of setup as the stones need to come out the bottom and top of the bore a little. Looks like I may have to make one.

Dumb question...
1.
Could you get a 4age block, cut a 5cm to 10cm slice off the top, drill out out the head bolt holes and use that as your torque plate?
Or
2.
Get a head, remove all moving parts and inserts, bore out the combustion chamber area to a bit bigger than the bore required and use the head as your torque plate?

Problems with 1. - the bore would be exactly the same as the bore you want to bore out... is this a problem?
Problems with 2. - once you bored 4 big holes would it be rigid enough?

I used to think that the orange and green tictacs gave you special powers. The orange ones would make you stronger and the green ones would make you faster. So i used to eat some green ones and run around my lounge as fast as i could, then eat the orange ones and try to pick up the sofa. I wish it were true!

Solution 1, simply over bore the torque plate you've made. Question is, would it be less work than making a torque plate out of a chunk of steel? Not much less I would think, and probably less effective.
