TRD LSD v's Hilux LSD

Postby beeker » Mon Aug 07, 2006 9:15 am

I'm told that the Hilux LSD's don't have a full lockup feature in them, and with too much throttle they'll spin one side. Apparently there is a 'power lock' or other mods that you can do to fix this.

Anyone know the detail on this, and the options. Just interetsed to understand this more. Any handy links on this topic ?

You can get the Hilux lsd's reshimed to fix the problem.

Nup reshim is kind of like a rebuild, just increases the initial torque so it will lock up sooner and grip harder under load.

We did this to my brothers 4agze which ended up acting like a locker wtf. He had a kaaz unit though, bling bling. I dont know how easy it is to rebuild toyota ones but usually it costs heaps.

if you look what happens wen you shim them you might as well just lock them because most ppl shim them wayy to much to get the effect they want and there pretty much just always engaged

Done a bit more research here. Looks like its a "Dana Powr-Lok" which is actually a new LSD unit. Apparently this is much more consistent and has more bite than the std hilux lsd, which is of course very important when racing.

Do TRD make a LSD for this hilux Diff ?
ie better than the std factory lsd item.

In my opinion reshimming is a waste of time for a race car. The only way to make them work properly is to have new 'ramps' made.
Are you having trouble with the AE86 Diff? What is the reason for wanting to change it?

I'm prepping for 4agte, so need beefed up driveline.

When you say new ramps, I assume this is modification to the LSD and the way it bites ? Who does this type of work ?

steelie gears in auckland will do the shim & rebuild for about $400+ which is pretty good. If you dont want it like a locker just tell them mild shim for circuit or targa car ... drift shim is close to lock but not quite i.e. can get a cert & pass wofs with it

Why do so many circuit racers saying shimming is no good ?

Shimming is just not good enough for real racing.

Well all shimming does is increase your preload it does not have anything to do with the lockup of the Diff, this is controlled by the ramp angles. Many people will tell you they are good enough but they just aren't! If you Shim it too much you end up with a locked diff and any less you end up with a diff that will spin 1 wheel inconsistently so you never know what the car is going to do! The trouble with a locked diff is you loose turn in and require a different car setup and driving style (which if you want to do can work very well but in this case just put a Spool in it). If you are set on a Hilux Diff then get new 'ramps' made and it will work well.

Mine skids both wheels every time, as long as you break traction with no turning force (i.e straight line) If you drop the clutch while turning or when the rear axles are travelling at unequal speeds it just single spins.

Thanks, it all makes sense now. Who would be good to make new ramps up in Auckland ? And whats the budget ?
