Are you having trouble with the AE86 Diff? What is the reason for wanting to change it?
Drifter4ag wrote:steelie gears in auckland will do the shim & rebuild for about $400+ which is pretty good. If you dont want it like a locker just tell them mild shim for circuit or targa car ... drift shim is close to lock but not quite i.e. can get a cert & pass wofs with it
NZ_AE86 wrote:Well all shimming does is increase your preload it does not have anything to do with the lockup of the Diff, this is controlled by the ramp angles. Many people will tell you they are good enough but they just aren't! If you Shim it too much you end up with a locked diff and any less you end up with a diff that will spin 1 wheel inconsistently so you never know what the car is going to do! The trouble with a locked diff is you loose turn in and require a different car setup and driving style (which if you want to do can work very well but in this case just put a Spool in it). If you are set on a Hilux Diff then get new 'ramps' made and it will work well.
