4age Blown Seal

Postby ants_ae92 » Wed Aug 09, 2006 12:07 am

My ongoing problems with my 4age continue.

Blown headgasket - replaced
Blocked radiator - because of the blown radiator (flushed and cleaned)

had/have a pressurised cooling system, which we thought the flushed radiator would have fixed. I took out the thermostat to rule that out as a blockage in the system. Are there any other places that 4age cooling systems are prone to blockage. Have tried new radiator cap/thermostat.

Also, form the other day, It seems I have blown a seal around the cambelt and lost half my oil. What seals are down there? Obviously they need to be replaced. Any hints or ideas on what may have blown or gone wrong?

We replaced the cam seals when we did the head gasket, as I managed to get a full gasket head set for $100.

So I guess that leaves crank, oil pump seal. Thanks Revhead

Escortman,
Have my complete smallport ready for some gze pistons and rings. Going to get the gze pistons of thashz. Then its just a rebuilding process. Probably just going to take it off the road to do the conversion, at least then I can make sure its not going to crap out on me again

Take it the head has been machined and crack tested?

If the system is still pressurising theres a good chance you still have combustion gases in the cooling system, get a tk or cyl leakage test done then go from there or you will be walking around in circles....

No the head had no signs of warpage at all, so we left it.

looks like I might just take it off the road, as I was going to do a turbo conversion with a small port motor/gze pistons. So I think I will just go the whole hog and do it properly with that motor. I dont want to have to spend money on a motor im just going to pull out and sit in the garage.

Thanks for your help man.

Pressure vented to catch can, oil coming only on the front side of the engine, no oil around the rear dipstick.

Bugger, probably was it then. It definitely didnt look warped, but how mush is considered warped,? Is it like within thousands of an inch or what?

Will make sure it is done properly on the new motor then!

3/8's of F$%^ all, can't tell with your eye.
You might also want to test the hardness at the same time.

It isnt.

You can check for warp and twist with a straight edge and feelers but why guess? Get it machined and looked over properly by a reconditioner. If its been overheated the gasket has blown because the head has warped and lost tension on it, remember that the headgasket is sealing coolant and oil under pressure not to mention combustion pressure and heat. I would never put a head back on without getting it checked and skimmed, even if it came off for an oil leak and not a overheating problem. not worth it.

do it once do it right.

Point noted and lesson learned, will not make the same mistake with the turbo motor.

So most likely I still have exhaust gases leaking back into the water/cooling system. This wont cause the oil to turn misty like it does with the BHG?
