Small speakers

Postby ollieboy » Mon Jan 01, 2007 1:30 pm

I'm looking for speakers for my car but they are only about 4" and all the speakers I can find for sale are 6". Anyone know of some good 4" speakers?

Firstly, is the standard 4" speaker bolted directly to the metal, or is it part of a "baffle" made out of plastic or similar that is then bolted to the metal? If it is attached to a baffle, not the metal part of the door itself, then that baffle is probably around 6" or more in diameter (may be funny shaped though), and you can more than likely make up a MDF replacement for this with a cutout for a 6" speaker. Make sure the speaker magnet doesn't hit the window when it's wound down and make sure it fits beneath the door card too, so you might have to do some measuring to find the optimum thickness of the MDF baffle if you make one. Don't forget to paint it or whatever so it doesn't distort from moisture absorbtion too..

Either way (4" or 6"), ask on NZICE mag forums and they will give you a good lineup of great brands according to your budget, and some great tips on how to install them properly, but I recommend Focal, DLS or Rainbow (available from Paul's Audio) as some brands you've probably never heard of, but make $&#$% awesome speakers

You say that you cannot get 4 inch components... then in the same sentence you say that you can get 4 inch components and hotwire is the place to go.

Make up your mind!

Well if it ain't in the door, then it's either in the parcel tray, in which some cheapies would be fine (rear fill isn't terribly important), or it's in the dashboard, in which I recommmend some 4" components. Which components all depends on your budget. If you have $200+ to spend, I definately recommend talking to the guys at [Paul's Audio about some Rainbow, Focal or DLS components. Believe me, even the entry level models from these brands shit all over pioneer and fusion etc.

Lol sorry, I bought my Focal Components off of them a while ago, but now that you mention it, I remember them having a "Focal Clearout" and that they wouldn't stock them actively anymore because of some issues with the distributor or something.

Anyway, back to the original topic, congrats on buying the Rainbow's. After you've gotten used to these things, go and have a listen to a mate's system with you shitty xplod coaxials or whatever, and you will honestly be blown away by the huge difference in sound quality :P
