20V AE101 running rich - how to fix?

Postby fuel » Tue Feb 27, 2007 11:55 pm

Hey guys, my flatmate has a '92 AE101 20V Levin which is running hella rich - it is white and the rear bumper and boot gets absolutely covered in soot soon after being washed.

It has done about 180,000kms but being a Toyota it should be sweet - right?! I've been driving it a bit these last few weeks and it doesn't seem all that quick eh, and just doesn't seem to have any balls at all in the high rpm range. It's not running rough at all and seems to be accelerating smoothly, and it idles sweet as too so I figured the spark plugs are all good. Oil and filter have been recently changed too. The only mods are a pod filter (which seems pretty clean) and a big f**k off noisey muffler at the rear.

Any ideas? cheers

How would I check if the VVT is working or not? I notice it takes like 10 minutes for the thing to be fully up to normal temperature and until then it idles at like 1400rpm.

Even when it fully warms up it still doesn't run any better and blows lots of black smoke.

VVT, Thermo
dirty throttle bodys(pcv oil), possably injectors

Oxygen sensor

Faulty oxygen sensor will make them run very rich.

I'd be starting with the thermostat and going from there

Not sure if it would fix your prob as it seems to be related to something else, but you air/fuel can be tweaked slightly by the little bypass bit on the AFM. You'll need an exhaust analyser to do it right though.
