Intake Question

Postby Luke28 » Mon Apr 23, 2007 9:05 pm

Just wanted to know whether the length of your intake would have any affect on performance??
wud it make any difference having the air filter close to the throttle bodies rather then down near a headlight?? does length matter??? (of the intake that is)

Cheers - Luke

Yes.
Aim to have your throttle body to airfilter distance similar to the factory distance. If it's a bit longer it shouldn't hurt too much.
Make an effort to feed the airfilter cool air.

I used to think that the orange and green tictacs gave you special powers. The orange ones would make you stronger and the green ones would make you faster. So i used to eat some green ones and run around my lounge as fast as i could, then eat the orange ones and try to pick up the sofa. I wish it were true!

umm...how does having the air filter closer than factory effect things? good or bad? ...and how close is too close?

Cant say Ive read much for injected engines on it, but on carbs many wrters - vzard etc- used tuned length intakes. The longer 'generally' assisting the torque curve.
Cant believe im still a member here.

Thats way too close. You'll loose power/throttle response

I've seen lots of ae86 drifter cars in japan have that set up (above pic) i even have pics of just a bell mouth in front the butter fly, don't know why the hell they do it but its very popular over there, it must kill low down torque but i guess they don't really need low down when there sitting at red line sideways. if i had a scanner i can post up some pics from my ae86 REV tuning mag.

i really don't see the difference between running that set up and having open quads.

Mine runs like that too!

Didnt have the induction pipe so I was like meh, just chuck the filter on

Is it the same with individual throttles? I always see them with open trumpets

i was under the impression that the length of the filter trumpet only effected cars running ITBs

This is an article about intake lengths from the filter to the throttle body.

Can't seem to find the original but the important bits are in english.

The answer is, and always has been, HELMHOLTZ!!!!!
Motorsport is like sex. You could take it to track and have a long, enjoyable session, or you could take it to the strip and get it over with in less than 20 seconds.

if youve actually seent the blue top intake its really not that long standard the filter is only 20cm away from the TB and theres only a 30 cm "trumpet" off that with no intake resonators like 90s intakes

so will having your intake in under the guard make a difference?

compared to a Cold air box in the bay?

just seems easier to run a pipe through the inner guard
