ke70 owners!, steering upgrade, advice needed

Postby Mike- » Mon Jan 21, 2008 4:53 pm

ok at the moment ive got a wagon with circulating ball steering,(i think)
and im wanting to get rack and pinion,
ive got a wreck with the rack and pinion in it and want to know if its just a
case of replacing the steering rack or the whole front suspension/steering setup, and is there any fabrication involved.

thanks

you will more than likely need to cut the section of firewall where the steering shaft comes through and swap it for the donor.
box steering comes out straight, whereas the rack steering comes through on quite an angle

The rack bolts to the crossmember, I'd imagine the steering box versions wont have the mounts/bolt holes on it to take a rack.

yeah steering box will mount to the chassis, but i dont think you need to mod the firewall?

a r&p steering column including the mount should put it in the right place, you may need to drill holes for the mount, and you may need the plastic cowls as well (but im not sure on that bit) you may also need the r&p brake pedal as the coloum runs in a slightly different angle as fangsport mentioned

you will need a r7P cross member. i dont know if the steering arms are the same or not.... i have some KE70 steering arms if you need some.

while it wil take a little bit of work, i dont thinks its a drasticly hard job... but very worth imo

if you've got the whole wreck, then i'd say swap cross member, steering column and everything over.
cant you look at them both to compare?
i've thought of doing the same thing.
steering arms might be different, but i don't know...
