Ever seen what happens to the bearings on a turbo that has been just "turned off" after driving, year after year?
Ever seen what happens to oil at 400+ degree's?
not pretty.....

audi quattros also ran factory external wastegates though, and they have their small flexi and merge into the exhaust pretty close to the engine.

can't see how that would work.
when the turbotimer turns off the turbo has to spool down anyway. so whether you turn it off from idle as soon as you stop, or 2 minutes later its exactly the same.
cat007 wrote:Exactly - the idea of a turbo timer is not to spool the turbo down, but to allow the core and shaft of the turbo to become cool enough so that when the flowing oil in and around these items stops flowing, it doesn't cook itself and get burnt.
fivebob wrote:Please explain how idling the engine has any significant effect on a water cooled turbo??? Or indeed why a water cooled turbo needs cooling down any further than it already is?
I'll give you a hint, water boils well before oil cokes
