Gas turbine engines are not as efficient as piston engines.
Their advantage is power to weight/size ratio.
However it doesn't mean you can't put one in a car.
A few car companies produced prototypes in the 60's
Also somewhere on youtube I found a racecar that has a turbine engine that powers the turbo for the piston engine! No Lag!!!

I used to think that the orange and green tictacs gave you special powers. The orange ones would make you stronger and the green ones would make you faster. So i used to eat some green ones and run around my lounge as fast as i could, then eat the orange ones and try to pick up the sofa. I wish it were true!

Gas turbine engines are more efficient.
Normal petrol engine (average) efficiency is about 20-25%, while normal gas turbine is about 40-60%.

Strange, why not just bleed the air from turbine engine without having an extra turbo? This would make it lighter to start with....

Probably because they realised it would not fit in normal car.
But they done a similar engine but flat, and also it appears they used subaru heads (16v quad cam), if you look through their galleries, that engine will fit a subaru with no mods to the body. Belt work also looks like subaru style only weird looking thing is that cams rotate 2(?) times faster than crank.

rover raced one at le mans

throttle lag was the biggest issue!

not true GT's can get up around 50% efficiency though in a very narrow power range.

Who cares about narrow power band, you not going to attach mechanical transmission to it anyway (it would be very stupid). Just a reducing gearbox and generator.
On other end of generator there will be induction motor for example, much more efficient way than going all through clutch+2 different gear ratios before getting to do anything.
Right now car industry is so backwards.
I can't believe they invest in mechanical CVT, when electric is much more efficient... Generator+Electric motor is much more efficient then mechanical transmission in many ways....

one problem with gt powering a generator and then motor is all the extra weight of generator and motor AND some batteries.
Starting gt's uses vast amounts of fuel so you need enough storage so you don't need to start stop the gt often.
Also 'small' gt's at around 30Kw are only ~30% efficient, get to an efficient size and your generator and batteries will be massive.

you'll probably be interested in the engine & fuel forum here http://www.eng-tips.com/

With generator and motor is not necessarily to be huge and heavy, you could run it say at higher frequency (400Hz) to make winding a lot smaller (also this has effect of less reduction needed for generator to operate from gt).
As for size wise, 100-300kW APU is of the size of an 6 cylinder engine. Generator can be size of 4 shoe boxes, same goes for electric motor.
