I wonder how easy it would be to OCR and then try translating using something like Google translate, then go through and fix up the machine translation...

To answer my own question... It's possible, but a PITA because the OCR program is in Russian. Translation through Microsoft word or Google translate isn't too bad but it takes about 1-2 hours per page to get it right because the layout keeps stuffing up due to the diagrams and columns

It's not something I'd want to do for the whole manual, but it's ok for the few pages that I need at a time.

I know PDF is shit (especially when viewed with Adobe Reader, but at home I don't use that, I don't even know exactly what I use (kpdf?) but it is lightning fast compare to Reader) but hey some people are fond of MS and tend to use it, and I certainly will not be able to open MS Oirifice 2007 format.

lol I was going to post an actual on topic thread here, but don't want to join in on this bitch fest as to which is the best format, its amazing what people will complain about these days. i never thought PDFs would be one of those things tho.

No luck there I'm afraid. The Russian OCR program only produces RTF/Word/Excel files. I've tried to convert these to PDF but it fails, probably due to layout/character set issues. When I've got time I'll try some other conversion utilities, but I don't hold out much hope that they will work either.

If we don't have the document already formatted as per the original then it make producing a manual a major PITA, translation is only half the job.

But, for curiosity, are you OCR-ing to preserve Layout?
I will definitely run into issue where I will have to break layout...
You are probably aware that Russian is a bit longer (in letter count) than English.
to save you time OCR-ing, you could just scan it and I will use OODraw to recreate layout and move modify pictures.

That and to split the text and pictures automatically, plus the ability to use an auto translator get get a rough translation of the document. I've tried this and it works reasonably well, Russian auto translates a lot better than Japanese

is it yaw rate sensor?

I've done that page, it took me more time to $&#$% around with layout then the actual translation BTW.
Anyway it is about 2 hours per page, I would say (with layout and image manipulations).

I think so. The auto translator gave it as "sensor of lateral movement". There are only two sensors that I know of that have anything to do with movement, one is the deceleration sensor the other is the yaw sensor.

Layout is a problem, it doesn't need to follow the same exact layout, but probably still needs the three columns. I guess we could just translate the text in one chunk and try and insert the pictures to give a reasonable layout.

I could sprint through text if it was one huge chunk...
Then it will be easier to insert pictures in there later on and worry about over/under flow of text to/from other pages.
